Was having a helluva problem with my driving. I went from a terrible slice when I first started 2 years ago, to developing a wicked pull hook over the past 6 months or so. Yesterday I tried something different on the last 9 holes I played. I went from a strong grip to a neutral grip on the driver, and really loosened up how tight I was holding the grip. WOW! 6 of the 7 drives went *mostly* straight, ending up on fairways or just off the edge into light rough, and they went farther as well. I'm guessing I was hitting about 240 on average, which for me is pretty darned good, and I ended up shooting the best score I've ever shot at this course. 95 at Davy Crockett ain't bad for me.

Just tight enough to keep it in your hands bud. It's your wrists you have to keep tight.

I had the same problem, slice corrected to nasty hook. I spent hours on the range changed my grip, stance slightly each and moved ball little forward in my set up...swing slower. I am hitting ball 20 to 30 yards longer off the T. My Irons have become little shorter due to opening them up a hair. I used to have the club face way closed.

Bottom line is with practice handicap is dropping fast. Shot 84 / 87 playing as a 14 this weekend in our clubs fall outing.

I had a strange day on the course once. Was hitting the ball all over the place with the driver. I decided I'd try to loosen up and rely on my swing to get the clubface square. And it did. I still hit some shots where I held too firmly, but when I focused on a looser grip, it went straight all the time.

Experimentation is key. I played a fade for years and thought I was long enough
but I found out how to hit a draw and it went 50 yards further and straight (well
some of the time) Try inside out , outside in, Find what works for you and start
scoring well. Try to get 10 low rounds this year.

I noticed you're in Memphis, do you ever play North Creek off of Stateline rd in DeSoto county?

I haven't played North Creek yet. I live up on the Northeast side of town in Bartlett, and the farthest out I've gone to golf so far is T.O. Fuller. I'm normally at Davy Crockett or Quail Ridge ($21/cheap, $45/close to home) or Fox Meadows ($35/close to work) or Audubon ($35/close to friends).

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 40 yrs My current handicap index or average score is: 4.0 factor My typical ball flight is: Straight however sometimes slight draw. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
