For some reason I can not grab the concept of this format, can somebody explain to me. Is this like a best ball format?

They were playing foursomes 'alternate shot' today. The pairs play one ball, one person tees off and the other hits the second shot, then they keep alternating until the ball is holed. Tee shots are alternated so one person isn't teeing off all the time.

Best ball is actually a format where both players play their own ball and the lowest score of the two counts as the team score.

They played Foresome match play yesterday and play Four-ball match play today, and all team members have to play. On Saturday they play both foursome match play and four-ball match play, but only 5 matches of each, so 2 players from each team have to sit out each session. On Sunday they play single match play with all players. Right from the definitions in the rule book:

Forms of Match Play
Single: A match in which one player plays against another player.

Threesome: A match in which one player plays against two other players, and each side plays one ball.

Foursome: A match in which two players play against two other players, and each side plays one ball.

Three-Ball: Three players play a match against one another, each playing his own ball. Each player is playing two distinct matches.

Best-Ball: A match in which one player plays against the better ball of two other players or the best ball of three other players.

Four-Ball: A match in which two players play their better ball against the better ball of two other players.

So as I was watching yesterday's alternate shot format (which I really enjoy), I was wondering how the players choose the ball they use. I assume they play the same ball through a hole without changing it out? Like Phil and AK yesterday. Did they hit Callaway or Nike? Anyone?

It can be a fun format. We use it at certain couples events at my club, where it's known by it's better name of "divorce golf."

Since the OP's question is answered, can someone answer mine? I understand how you win, lose, or draw a match, and I get the points system, but can someone explain to me what winning 3 and 2 or 2 and 1 mean?

It means you're x amount of holes ahead with y amount of holes left to play so there's no way the other team can catch up.

3 and 2 means one team has a three hole lead and there's only 2 holes left to play, so even if the other team won both of those holes they'd still be behind by 1. 2 and 1 means 2 up with 1 to play. 10 and 8 and you've given the other guy a complete hiding.

I was wondering the same thing. My guess is they just play the ball of whoever tees off.

I would have guessed that they would play the ball of whoever is going to hit the approach shot, since that person is going to need to know more of how it reacts around the green.

Back when Duval was a Titleist staffer, he and Tiger were paired for that format, and he ended up just playing Nike for that day. I think there was some hulabaloo about it, too.
