First off this seems to be a wonderful community and I am happy to be a part of it. Kudos to you all!

Ok here it goes. I am 33 and I have played golf for about 10 years, but the catch is I have only played about 2 rounds a year! LOL!

Recently I have began to play a lot more and for some reason as my game improves, my love for the game improves! Imagine that! Lately all I can think about is getting on the course. That being said I have always used a Wal-Mart brand of clubs since I didnt play often ad didnt care much.

Since I am still new to the game, but want to play more, I would like a better set of clubs. I am looking to get started in the $400-500 range. I know that will not begin to touch some of the elite clubs, but I need a suggestion on a set for that price range.

Can you help me please? :)

THANK YOU!

With soooooo many to choose from, recommending clubs would be like recommending which car you should buy without knowing your driving habits, need for fuel economy, etc. I'd say pick a category; game improvement, super game improvement, player's, etc. After that, look at the irons in that category and decide which ones you'd like to know more about and ask here, and definately try to go hit them.

do you want a full set for 400-500?

if so, i would get a TM Burner 07 driver (150 or less if used)

Cleveland or Ping Karsten putter (70-80)

a used set of irons

Tom Watson wedges (setof 3 for 150 i think)

and us leftover for wood/hybrids

In my bag:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 | 15º 3-Wood: Ping G410 | 17º 2-Hybrid: Ping G410 | 19º 3-Iron: TaylorMade GAPR Lo |4-PW Irons: Nike VR Pro Combo | 54º SW, 60º LW: Titleist Vokey SM8 | Putter: Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas H7

Buying gently used clubs seems like a good idea. I'd assume you could get an 07 Burner for around $100, since it's only $150 new.

In the carry bag:
'07 Burner 10.5 Driver (S Flex)
Hyper X 5 Wood
J33CB 4-PW Irons (S Flex)
Vokey 54-10 Spin Milled Watson 08 60 Lob Wedge G5i Blade

The Adams Tom Watson wedge set would be a fantastic start at the scoring end of things. I think it's closer to $100 than $150, but don't quote me on that because the only time I ever saw them I had to close the site because they didn't ship to the UK

For a putter, that's just personal preference. There's a TON of threads on "which putter?" but the gist of all of them is "go to a shop, select every putter in your price range (and some from just above) and try them ALL." No matter how dumb you think the putter looks, try it. You'd be surprised!

Irons, you'd most likely be best getting a set of Game Improvement irons for maximum forgiveness until you get better. There's a couple threads on the subject on this part of the forum, so just have a browse round there.

Get hybrids! They're crazy easy to hit. Just try stuff out in the store till you find something comfortable and nice to hit for you. I took one swing with my Cobra Baffler DWS and just knew right then it was the one for me~

As far as a driver goes, well. If you can comfortably hit a driver already, I'd actually just recommend the TM '07 Burner straight off. If you can't, I would honestly go without one for a while until you start grooving your swing. Don't run before you can walk etc. etc.!

Good luck with the search, and enjoy being told that whatever is in a poster's sig is the best club you can get

#1 is a pretty good deal, but not a lot of people like that putter, and there are no wedges

In my bag:

you could try looking into nickent used clubs. i know the 3dx iron set it great for new players. you can find them used for around $100-$150. they have hybrids also which is a plus. Then invest in a good used driver $75 and the rest you should save for lessons and range time! goodluck!

Find a local golf shop that you trust. (Talk to your golfer friends for recommendations.) For me it happens to be the Edwin Watts Store in Knoxville, TN. I can go in there, discuss the state of my game honestly along with what I'm trying to accomplish. They will recommend various products that would meet my needs and let me hit them. Using the simulator to measure clubhead speeds, ball speeds, launch angle, etc. we're able to narrow things down and make my decision.

Some sales people are not as knowledgeable or are only interested in selling whatever they have too much stock of or whatever offeres the best commission so it is important to find someone you can trust.

BTW, if you look at clubs on ebay don't even bother with anything sold as "new". Most manufacturers do not allow their legitimate dealers to sell on ebay. You are most likely going to get counterfeit clubs. Others here will say different but I have had excellent luck with 3balls.com.

Get a set of Top Flites. You should be able to get the whole set for under your budget and they're actually half way decent starter clubs. Just make sure you get steal shafts and not graphite. I just played with a guy who was killing 'em.

Nike Sweet 16

Callaway Steelhead Plus 19*

Srixon I-701 3-P

Cleveland CG-16 Black Pearl 52* & 58*

Cleveland VP Milled No. 3

i learned on a set of dunlop clubs from walmart, i played on those for like 2 seasons then went to dicks sporting goods when i finally had the money and got fitted and ended up with callaway 06 big bertha irons, i been playing on those for a season or so. one day i figured for the heck of it to pull out the old dunlops and i played better with them...part of me felt if i got new clubs it would really help me out....but it really didnt, just me playing longer helped me learn my swing and how to fix it...i have recommended walmart clubs to everyone i know thats starting out they really arent that bad...id maybe get a new driver and wedges and putter but the irons are pretty sweet for learning, might have just been the set i got i dunno

Ok guys don't beat me up, but I went to Dicks and talked to the "pro" guy there and for my level of play he felt good about me getting a complete set of the Maxfli Black Max set's. He said that they were great all around clubs and the shafts were made by a good company. He also said that Taylor Made makes them.

So I got that set. I am going to add a nice putter and maybe a few nicer clubs as I progress.

Thanks for your help. I feel as though I am too wet behind the ears to try and find used clubs that are of good value and condition. In other words I would know what a good club was if someone hit me in the face with it. I will take some time and learn here. :D
