So i was at the range today, and i dont know if its the rang balls if their limited distance or whatever. But i was only hitting my 5,6,7 iron as long as my 8 iron (about 150 yards). Anyone else have this happen, or any fixes to it?

ive had the problem as where my 4 iron went as far as my 9 iron

i was overswinging you might try to check tempo my .02 though

In addition to tempo, I know if I'm a little tight, my distances are a little off.

I've been going to my local range for over 10 years. They use rocks. During the year, they introduce new rocks into the mix. Sometimes they fell good, sometimes, they're not. I think that the yardarge signs are at shorter distances to compensate.

I more concerned with shot direction, trajectory, shape than distance since I know it's touch and go. If I'm curious about distance, I'll bring a few real balls and hit them out there.

Yeah - just take one of those range balls .. hold it out about shoulder high and drop it on the concrete. If your range is like my range . .the ball will barely bounce.

does your range use jell-o for balls or something? if your trying to imply that the balls at your range are very hard, wouldnt they bounce a lot?

like the other posters said, range balls are inconsistent. i'd go by how it feels off the clubface. also if you hit off mats you may be hitting the longer irons a little chunky but you can tell by the feel. if it's a problem on the course, then i might be concerned.

As other people have said, don't worry about distances at the range.

I too have hit my 7 iron the same distance as my 4 iron. It seems like the shorter distance clubs aren't affected as much as the longer distance clubs.

All the driving ranges I've been to here in town use "range balls" which are different than real balls. If you look at them close, you can see that the dimple patters are weird. Some balls have very very shallow dimples, some balls have dimples with alot of space in between each one, etc.

From what I've read, balls like this do not fly very far. Probably because the courses don't want to have to build 300 yard driving ranges to accomodate everyone hitting balls. I've even been to some ranges that don't allow you to hit your driver.

Also, you can't be 100% certain that the yardage markers on the range (if there even ARE any) are accurate. Where are the yardages measured from?

When I go to the range, I pick a target and aim for it, practicing my tempo/body positions/ball flight. If I need to get yardages, I go to the course late in the evening when no one is there, and pick a hole or 2 to hit several balls from different locations (usually the 200/150/100yard markers).

At the beginning of the year I go to the range just to get a general estimate on distance and then figure out exactly how far I hit them on the course. Other than that when I'm at the range I'm working on swing mechanics, trajectories, etc.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
