I have been using an 18 degree Hybrid to bridge the gap between by 24 degree hybrid and three wood. Really do not like it and have been considering going back to a wood to fill the gap between the 24 hybrid and 3w.

Does anyone with a lower handicap use a 7W? What would be your iron equivalent with it?

Thanks!

Depending on the lofts of your irons, the 7-Wood is somewhere between a 2 and a 3-iron, closer to the 3.

As for lower handicaps using it, I believe Vijay Singh had one in his bag not too long ago.

Lots of good players use them.

I've got one (though I'm not good XD) I prefer hitting it out of the rough than using a hybrid

One of my favorite all time clubs is an original Steelhead 7 wood. It comes and goes in my bag, depending on wind, course, and other clubs I might play, but for those 200+ yard high approach shots, nothing has ever been better for me. The easiest club to hit consistently I have ever owned (I'm on my second one, and may have bought the last new one in stock with the Memphis 10 shaft at Callaway.)

I think you're right Shindig. I know Lee Trevino had one in his bag too.

I use a 21° hybrid, I don't use a 5 wood, cause I don't get more distance of it and the hybrid gives more playability options... so I think I will stick with it for a long time. I think Adam Scott is also using a 21° hybrid and no 5 wood.

Don't know if this qualifies, but I played this weekend with someone who is around a 5 or 6 and uses a 7-wood.

course effect:
I just got a 5 wood, in my front yard I put two straight down the middle of the street. Yesterday on the course I could not hit it... aargg. I don't play with any low handicappers but I get the sense that 5s or 7s become a "special" club for some people and as the contents of the bag changes that is the one club that doesn't.

My best golfing buddy has maybe a 10 handicap, maybe slightly better, and his best club is his 7W. On a standard shot he hits it a bit further than his 3i (200+), but I've seen him muscle up and put it 230+. One of the best shots I've seen in person was one he hit with that club. He pushed his drive into a right side fairway bunker on a short par 5. Hit a nice, high, slight draw out of the bunker with his 7W from about 200 yards, bit pretty good on the green, and rolled it inside 10 feet.

I play a 19˚ 585h, and it performs similarly for me, though I've never put a shot inside 10 feet from 200 yards in a fairway bunker with it!

Back before hybrids became the rage, several PGA Tour players used 7-woods as a second fairway wood. (Showed up in Golf Digest’s “What’s in my bag” feature).

Also, at the 2004 U.S. Senior Open at Bellerive C.C. in St. Louis, lots of players carried 7-woods. Walked with a couple of groups who made the cut but weren’t threatening the lead, and the players were really talkative. Most used 7 woods to replace long irons, and liked them on long par 3s.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Not exactly. lots of people dont have hybrids because contrary to popular belief, they arent that great for everyone.

7 wood wise, i know a guy who plays one and hes pretty good. they are versatile, but i would recomend something like a 19 degree 5 wood.. as with my personal swing, a 7 wood with something like 20+ degrees gets way to far into the air with anything approaching a wisp of wind. Veej Did carry a 7 wood, but so far as i remember it was bent down to a 5 wood loft and therefore incredibly open so as to fit his fade ball flight. Had it in the bag for a couple of tournys this year.

I am far from a low handicapper, but I wouldn't want to play without my 9 wood. Wish I could find an 11 wood at around 29 degrees.

BTW I have never found a hybrid that I hit well
