Does she still play?

  flopdarock said:
lol... yeah... when i was "teaching" her... lets just say i spent alot of time sleeping on the couch after her "lessons"... i think she expected me to show her how to hit balls the way i do and when the results werent like mine... the frustration level went thru the roof no matter how much i niced things down

Have someone else from your golf team teach her, female if possible; stay out of it. It is possible that a teenage GF will react differently from a wife, but it is not worth the risk. Remember, anyone but you. Your job is to tell her how amazing she is, not how to do things. One more thing, she might be "the one" so be careful.

I'm pretty much with FHopper but would suggest a different option.

First, that you can golf doesn't mean that you can teach others to golf. So, just tell your GF that. Suggest that she get lessons from a pro. You can also tell her that you look forward to playing with her and look forward to learning how the lessons are going.

As it seems reasonable she is only interested in golf because you are interested in golf, she probably won't go through with lessons in the first place. If she does, it's on her dime and time, not yours.

do not... i repeat... DO NOT teach your gf how to play... trust me on this...

This is the answer, Dominic. Don't even try to teach her yourself if you value your relationship. When my wife first wanted to improve her game, I bought her lessons. The first thing the LPGA pro told her was to "not listen to anything your husband tells you". That was some of the best advice ever dished out by an teaching pro. We play together, and we have fun, but I don't offer advice, no matter how badly I want to do so.

If you want to test the health of the relationship, try to teach her to golf. That's what it's going to boil down to.

Tell her you're afraid that it's gonna cause you guys to fight, then she'll say,"No, no, it won't...I won't let it... I promise....etc."

Then start teaching her. And then when you start fighting you can at least use the - I told you so - defense and have a leg up right off the bat.

As an aside...

I should've mentioned above that I was fighting with a girl once in high school that would eventually become my ex. We were in my room, and there was a club leaning against a chair. She picked it up and threw it at me sideways end over end. The shaft hit me in the shin. It hurt. But had I taught her the correct way to swing a golf club at any point in the relationship, I might be dead right now.

Just be careful is all. And that's a true story.

There are two things a man should not try to teach his significant other: how to play golf, and how to drive stick. I've tried both, and crashed and burned miserably both times.

I don't claim to be knowledgeable about women, but if you think that the old 'I told you so' is helpful when dealing with women, you are sadly mistaken.

"I told you so" is actually worse than saying nothing. However, saying "keep your arm straight" will get you kicked out of the cart. Ask me how I know

My GF started playing with me about 6 months ago. She has her Pink Slazenger bag and some decent sports authority RAM clubs. It was very frustrating at first, #1 becasue she is my GF and #2 Im a righty and she is a lefty lol. We have played about 10 rounds and her best score is a 116. She does not like to play very much because of this but I tell her we should practice and she will get better. She plays with me about every 3 weeks or once a month. Finally this past weekend we played a really tough course and I shot from the tips so I was only out driving her by 50 yards instead of 120. She didnt keep her score and actually enjoyed it a lot. She even had her first birdie on an 88 yard par 3. I kept a few of her scores in my head and really she didnt do too bad. I think she only had an 8 on one hole. Ill let her keep playing with out a score until she realizes she could be a 100-105 player if she just gave it some thought.

You do have good female pros over there. I was going to take the wife over there, but then she started pumping out kids at an alarming rate.

wife and me both are in our 40s and I'd beg to differ from the concensus.... me as a consulting professional, it's challenging and fun for me to identify and solve problems in the most efficient way.

If you can approach the teaching part with a professional manner, and act like a real golf teacher would, there is very little risk here, even if the student is somebody you really care about.

teach them with the most simple way - I told her to toss her arms 45 degrees into the air towards the target... 20min later she's got a release that looks like somebody who's played long time.... just this 1 swing thought eliminate so many beginner errors - can't take it 2 far back inside or outside, can't have open club face, can't hit from over the top, lag happens naturally (hands infront of the club head).

with the proper release, the bottom of the swing is so big, it gives a very large margin for error to hit crisp iron shots, and the impact sounds professional too.

come on guys - golf is so easy. it's just too many people play it the complicated ways, making it very frustrating for beginners to pick up.

What's the matter with you? There is no such thing as having a "leg up" in an argument with a female! You just lose, that's all. End of story. Doesn't matter if you're right...

This topic came up a couple times before in the past - and the best advice really is - sent her to a Pro - they not only have a well trained eye, but also a very thick coat for all the frustration thats raining down on them day in and out.

Stuff like putting or chipping is easy to teach - cant go much wrong there. But if you try to show her how to escape a bunker and she sticks it in the lip 10 times in a row - its not her fault - its YOURS.

To the original poster I'm sorry I know this was not meant to be funny, but this thread has had me cracking up with some of the comments!

My wife and I have been together for 17 years and she reluctantly went to the range with me once and hit balls. She made Charles Barkley look like Tiger Woods,,lol! There was so much wrong with everything I had no starting point. We left the range and she said I love you but I don't like golf so please don't ask me to hit balls again. That was about 16 years ago and we happily have found other games we enjoy playing together!

In my case my wife had no interest at all in playing but I guess it's different if your wife/gf wants to learn.

All I can say is Good Luck Man!!!

    • Day 87 (27 Jul 25) - Made it an easy session with the wedge this afternoon, worked on staying in the shot and not lifting out - split between low spinners and higher floaters.
    • Shot my new low 72 (par 70) today. Had 5 birdies, also a new best, which included a hole out from the bunker on par 3 6th, and another hole out pitch from 15ish yards on the long par 4, 15th.  Got a couple of other good breaks. Except for an OB drive on 14th (and ensuing double bogey), not much went wrong. All in all I might have used up a year's worth of luck in a single day.
    • Back in the saddle after vacation.  Day 1: played 18. Did not have it, but still battled to an 82. Felt closer to a 90, but that’s fine.
    • Yes, I have seen this from the older crowd that play the 4,700 yard tees and want to know why they get less strokes from there. Always trying to game the system 🤣
    • Day 300 - 2025-07-27 Good 44-ball segment. GSPro was acting goofy, so I just put it on the Quad. Then I hit a bunch of low spinners. Hit 14° down to 9.8° down, with the average closer to 12.3° or so. Focused mostly on the backswing. Right knee good, hands roll up and out a little before laying off (FAR).
