Hi to all,

i am trying to find out why i get so little distance when hitting with any club.
Yesterday i measured my ss with the driver, and it was between 102 and 105. Now, when i hit my 5 iron, the ball will reach only about 165 yards. I hit it fine, in the middle of the clubhead, and the ball seems to take off quite fast, but goes anyway but far.

Is there any chance that the balls flies with too much spin and somehow, this spin makes the ball fly short?

At this moment i can´t measure this aspect of my game, and your comments would be really appreciated.

Umm well backspin should help the ball go further because it'll keep it up in the air.
Do your shots go high or low?

Also how far do you hit your drives?

In general i would say my shots have a mid to high trayectory.
I think a good drive would send the ball about 260 yards.

Thanks a lot for your help.

You hit your driver pretty far compared to the rest of your clubs.
For me it's a 250 yard drive and I hit my 5 iron 180 yards.

I'd say it's more of a problem with the type of irons you have.
Something probably doesn't suit you with them.

Do you tend to slice or fade your driver? I have slice/fade tendencies. You don't really see it in the ball flight of my PW-5 iron. My 4iron and 3irons tend to fade and my woods tend to slice.

Even though the ball seems to fly straight with most of my irons, the shots are higher trajectory and shorter distance than they should be. I can probably put my 5 iron about 160 with a nice whack but a lot of energy is spent on a clockwise spin. Usually the ball will land and kick right.

I think the balls i hit fly pretty straight, and when they land they keep bouncing straight.

My irons have regular steel shafts on them, and i they are good (Titleist 755).

Maybe it´s just something else what i am doing wrong.

Your just a short hitter then.

Nothing wrong with your game really. You hit it straight and your still not very short.

Well, having a ss of +100 mph, i wish i had something more than 5 iron - 165 yards.

Something is not right, if you hit your drives 260 and you only hit your 5 iron 165 yards. what distance do you hit all your clubs in the bag?

I am guess you are not hitting the 5 iron solid, did you try putting tape on the 5 iron to check for solid contact, you might be hitting a groove or two low on the club face.

My guess is he's got a driver swing and a 5 iron swing that are significantly different, at least more so than most people, and his drives probably aren't quite as long as he thinks.

That being said, 12 handicap is nothing to scoff at, and distance will probably come with time. That's how it worked for me anyway.

My distances are about like this:

PW... 105-110 yds

8i..... 135 yds (ss... 88-89 mph)

5i...... 165 yds (ss... 90 mph)

3i...... 190 yds

3w..... 220 yds (ss..... 100-102 mph)

1w...... 260 yds (ss..... 102-105 mph)

I will use tape to check the hitting zone. Again thank you all for your comments and help.

I'm guesing that all those above distances are carry distance.
If so, all the numbers are consistent except your driver.
Is your driver shaft length longer than standard?
Did you get fitted for your clubs?

My driver shaft is a grafalloy blue, stiff 45".

Never got fit, but considering my ss i think the shaft does not seem bad.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
