That's how it was for myself today in Tampa! The worst part is that the wind was swirling and it seemed like most of the day, the wind was hurting rather than helping.

20 mph??? I want to encourage you to play in wind every time you can -- it will improve your ball contact and skills. 20 mph is windy, but not excessively so. I play in a higher wind area, and we have 20 to 30+ mph winds a lot of days. Today, the NWS reported 17 to 20 mph while we played (sometimes it was 24 mph, and the gusts were higher.) Yeah, I had to hit a wood into the wind on a par 4 playing at 465 yards. The secret is to play when it is windy until the wind becomes just another factor you consider in your shots. The more you do it, the easier it is, and you learn to take advantage of it. I admit, putting is harder, and when the wind blows your ball around or off the green, that is too windy.

It's windy when you are hitting a 5 or 6 iron from 125 yards to keep the ball under control, or when you adjust your putt to allow for wind break. The game originated in a windy environment, and it has always been a factor in golf. Good wind players have a huge advantage when it is blowing. I once played with a former Oklahoma State teamer who was a good PGA tour player, and he told me that he thought one of the advantages the OSU golfers had was playing in windy conditions -- that forced them to learn shot shaping, solid contact, and club selection to optimize your chances with a shot. We were playing in a pro-am and a few of the pros could not clear a forced carry with their drive. Some landed in the water, others played to the side accepting a bogey rather than try the drive. He laughed and said watch this -- he hit a 1 iron about 230 under the wind to safely clear the hazard. He said, "I can hit an iron under a door -- closed." Learn to accept the wind, and allow yourself to score a few shots worse than normal without it being an issue. You will be a better golfer for it. Sounds like you are doing that.

Yea guys I played today too, I thought I was in St. Andrews or something. I had a 145 yard par 3, usually an 8 iron, used a 5 and barely got there..!!

It was a lot of fun though. Never played in wind like that!

As much as I agree with that in general, I find it odd that Tiger Woods plays so poorly in the wind. Last year's PGA was windy and he succumbed to Y.E. Yang, and look at the British last year as well... Maybe I'm wrong, but right now it

seems to me as though he doesn't do much when it's windy (except blame the wind for everything). It was really windy here yesterday as well. I hit a 3-iron on a 150-yard hole and a 5-iron from 158. It's intimidating, taking that much club, but it's awfully rewarding to strike the ball so purely the wind doesn't exaggerate the curve and the ball goes right where you'd planned.

I actually like playing when its windy. It brings a whole new dimension to the game and forces you to think and plan your shots more.
If golf werent challenging, what would be the point of playing at all?
