How do you really tell if the face of a wedge is holding up well? My Vokey was used and its face seems OK but why would someone sell a Spin Milled unless its face was worn?

Maybe they didn't like the way they tear up golf balls? I would just give the face a thorough look over and if it looks like the grooves in the sweetspot are very shallow, then you probably should get a new wedge.

Vokey wedges come with a half-dozen sole grind designs, each with multiple loft options. Possibly the person found that particular Vokey didn't meet his/her needs.

Maybe the player, in his wedges, started with a Vokey, a Callaway, and a Mizuno, and swapped them all out for three Clevelands. You really don't know why the previous owner switched. There's no CarFax for wedges.

If the wedge stops the ball when you hit it right, it's probably OK. And, you won't know this for sure until you practice and play with it for awhile.

If the Vokey does get worn, you might get it refurbed by the manufacturer (for a fee, of course).

I sold my 52 degree SM vokey due to the exact same thing mizunoplayer mentioned. They chew up balls and i put too much spin on them. If i could hit the ball a mile, id deal with it, but i cant. I was losing distance with that club due to the increased spin. Im waiting to get one of the new vokeys with the 2010 grooves.

I think this face is pretty fresh, so maybe he just did not like it.

It sure is a different club than my 56.

thats not worn bad. just be careful with it the oil can wedges wear down fast. try not to use it out of the sand much and keep it clean because it is made of rust it will wear faster. the rust is much softer than milled steel

Thanks for the reply Cody.
I use the 56 in the sand.
So far I wash my clubs in weak bleach water every few rounds and wipe them off after every hit. I use the Frogger brush with the nylon bristles.

That doesn't make sense. Once you've worn the chrome finish on a "standard" finish Vokey, it's the same steel underneath as the oil can. It certainly isn't "made of rust"; the rust you see is just a surface layer of oxidised iron.

To the OP: the SM wedge you show looks fine to me. Groove wear is over-rated as an issue for all but the pros. It's just another issue that's pushed as a problem to make us buy a new wedge (or 2, or 3...) every season.

ya obviously its not all rust but its outer layer is just rust
