There is an old book called the Search For The Perfect Golf Swing that was the Club Makers Bible in the 60s and still holds true today.   It has a ton of info about the swing, stance, etc. but it is the concensus that a Driver should be as light as feels good  for speed and Irons as heavy as you can handle for stability, distance and accuracy.     A great old good, if you can find one it is full of good stuff, still effective today.

From reading about the past a bit and getting stories from many older partners, I don't think golf has changed all that much. Sure, the number of people able to hit farther because more golfers are fitter, but that's kind of true of the general population of people. Fitness is a good trend throughout the entire population.

The equipment technology has made it easier for fitter people to hit farther, but based upon the Tutleman data it looks like the best weight is around 200gm.

I have been struggling with consistency with my latest Ping s58 irons and find they are about C8. My old irons were about D2. I am not big or strong but feel that the D2 allowed me to sense the club head a bit better.  Does that make sense?

Can anyone tell me how to add weight to my Ping s58s?

I am in South Africa so I have been unable to buy lead tape to try and doubt I will find someone to do them for me.

Hey Sciaffer,  If you can find some lead powder you can put it down the shaft and cork it or even sand will do it.     It has been found you can add up to 5 points down the shaft and not affect the club other than to ass Swinweight, which is 1 pt. per 2 grams of weight.    You may have to remove the grips, pout the material down the shaft and with a rod pound a small cork down to hold the material, like we used to do it in the day.     Today they use tip weights where the shafts have to be removed to add them.     Good luck and hope this helped.

I am not a club maker, but I would be careful about pouring anything down the shaft. To me it sounds as if doing so would mess up the dynamics of the shaft in terms of kick point and overall balance. I have even simply taped coins to the bottom of the golf head (do not really recommend it though).

A PING fitter could get new weights for your irons and replace the weights you have in there now. That's the best option IMO.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
