I walk and use a push cart. I'm in pretty good shape but just found the bag wore on one shoulder, since I can't find a two strap that fits easily. Plus it's much easier to just grab the cart rather then pick up/put down the bag 80+ times a round. I find that I play better when walking, as others have said, it gives you a chance to walk off bad shots. I do feel it if temps are over 92 or so.

I've recently started walking, and if I'm only playing the front nine on my course, I carry. The back nine has lots of hills, and long distances between holes. Push cart is nice here. Especially when we get summer temps over 105.

One big thing I discovered wehn I started walking was that my shoes sucked. Riding, I can play all day with crappy shoes and not notice it. Walking, and particularly walking while carrying the bag, I found my shoes to be killing me. I just ordered some Adidas 360 3.0 shoes to try after hearing how wonderful they are for walking.

push cart for me. the pros dont carry their bags, so im not going to make it any harder on myself. altho it begs the question, how would they do if they had to carry their own bags?

Even if you think you are in decent physical condition, you are really stressing core muscles that may not get used all the time by picking up, carrying, putting down your bag, etc. Those muscles will strengthen over time, and you will be better off for it.

Ive read/heard the opposite. Ive read that due to the fatigue thats caused by carrying your clubs that by the end of a round it costs you a few strokes. The reasoning for this was because you will be more tired from carrying your clubs, so you wont be as focused and thinking as clearly as normally would be.

Both can be true. The core strength gains will probably help you, although perhaps only a small amount. You'd probably do the best, then, by normally carrying, but on "important" rounds using a cart. Then you have the strength gain plus no fatigue effect.

Of course, you'd probably be better off using a targeted exercise program for the effect...

I'm 300lbs+ and used to take the cart every time for the last oh...10 yrs. Last year made the decision to start walking. I know how you feel. After 9 I thought I'd die. Swing went to hell after 9, back was tight. I was strong from lifting weights since college, but had no cardio....Now, I only walk. I use a push cart and have no problems walking 18. It took me almost 6 months to work up to feeling comfortable walking a full 18. Really was quite eye-opening. It made me realize how out of shape I really was not being able to walk 18 holes. Do it for yourself, walk....get a good Clicgear 2.0 or SunMountain cart, and walk every time. You'll see a world of difference in your golf game when you get the stamina...walking your yardages will help with your accuracy, walking to the green gives you early reads on the break of your putts, etc...and a world of difference in your health too.

nah don't worry about it. its usual for the first few outings just because you're body isn't used to walking. i carry my bag, full of 14 clubs, 7 balls, and necessities i should take out when i'm not in a tournament such as little survival kits with moleskin, sunscreen, etc., but you'll get used to it. i was the same way and i myself am tall and built. i shoot lower when i walk just cause it allows me to relax and enjoy my game more than when i ride a cart. every once in a blue moon when i don't feel like walking i use my clicgear 2.0 cart.

I almost always walk and used to carry, but this year I bought a nice push cart and it's made a huge difference. I used to get a fatigued back by midway through the back 9 but now, unless it's really hot out, or I'm having a bad round I feel pretty fresh through the round.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Walked and carried 9 again this morning and had no problems, guess the first time "woke" up some unused muscles.

I did have 30 bucks in credit at sports authority so I bought a little cheapy pull cart...

Im going to alternate between pull cart and carrying. Gonna use the pull cart on the days I lift, and carry on the days I dont.

Ive walked 2 times in 2 days, and I honestly dont think I will ever ride again, given the option to walk. Walking the golf course really enhances the game, I love it.

Gonna walk 9 again tomorrow, but Im gonna use the pull cart, just to use it since I just bought it.

I always walk unless the course doesn't allow walking. I almost always carry, but I have 3 wheel cart at my home course that I use mostly on rainy days as I like the option the umbrella overhead.

The push cart is easier on you, but it also mean you cover more ground, but it a nice switch from time to time especialy when the the weather is iffy and you want to carry all your rain gear with you.

I play bethpage so speed cart is hinderence on Black or Red due to the large mountains you must traverse.Besides you walk less carrying then pushing since you can cut across the greens and tee boxes. Most courses make you exit the fairway 30 yards from hole with the push cart when you walk straight to your ball by carrying. The 15th at The Black is not called cardiac hill for nothing.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
