How 'bout them hybrids?

Damn I despise those things! I believe it's the dumbest thing ever!!! Personally, for some reason, I can't hit hybrids to save my life. I don't know what it is, and believe me I've tried! I'd rather carry my 2 and 3 iron (which I hit further than people carrying around pitty hybrids) and even switch out my 2 iron for a 5 wood depending on the course layout, weather, etc. But man, maybe it's my negativity towards them, but I was so optimistic to trying them out. I've hit the G10 hybrids and the Adams Pro Gold, I just couldn't hit the ball the way I would like. Even the golf pro was dumbfounded because I had the swing, I had the contact spot, everything, but the hybrid gave me the shanks! I took it out to a high school tournament cause my coach said I should still give it a try. Yep, I found to never carry a hybrid again. Don't get me wrong, after it's said and done, I still believe hybrids are good clubs, for those who need them, and can hit 'em! Hah. What do you, the people, think of hybrids and how have they helped your game? I mean, after all, isn't that what they're for....?

Hybrids just don't work for me. I switched clubs his spring ( stiff ---> regular), and for two months played a 21* hybrid instead of a 5-wood.

I hit OK shots out of the medium ruff. BUT... Mr. Hybrid went wherever he wanted when I hit it off the fairway, or off a tee.

I eventually added a 5-wood to the 3-wood, and keep a three iron for specialty shots. (Good driving club on tight par 4s, and I can hit a low scramble fade or draw with it - I practice these two shots.)

And, my teed 3-iron goes the same distance as the occasional good hybrid shot.

My brother hits the exact same hybrid (Magique 3i) and does quite well with it. To each his own.

It's not the club, it is your swing. If you are a good golfer you can hit any club. Period. Do whats best for you. The old folks at my club hit hybrids because it is easier for them. I can hit long irons fine, but I bomb my hybrids even longer. It is actually the same swing as a 3 or 5 wood. A form like this really says, "I can't hit a hybrid to save my life. Is anyone else struggling with their hybrids, or is it just me?" aka should be in the tips part of thesandtrap form.

I have carried a 3 hybrid for a few years now. For a while, it was a great club for me. I would use it to punch out of the trees, off the fairway, and as an alternate driver on tight holes. A couple of months ago, I lost the ability to hit the thing straight. Now I usually hit a low hook with it and end up in trouble. I'm going to buy a 3 iron and ditch the hybrid because my favorite club right now is my 4 iron. If I can get my 4 iron to be a reliable club, I am certain that I can do the same with a 3.

My hybrid is my go to club. I love it out of the rough and use it all the time off the tee on short par 4s. I've had it since not long after I started playing so I didn't have to worry about the transition from hitting long irons to hitting hybrids.

I've got one that I use on windy days.
It goes 190 yards and travels low and straight.

I'd prefer a high flying 5 wood though.

I probably hit my 2-hybrid off the fairway or out of the rough at least 7-8 times per round, plus off the tee on those random 225 yard par-3s that are so popular these days. It's generally my second shot on par-5s if I'm not going for the green but I want to advance the ball 200 or so yards. I never used a 2-iron, so I can't really compare them, but I looooooooooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvvve my hybrid. I can hit it straight, I can hook it around trees, I can fade it on doglegs, it always always gets me out of the rough, and I've even been known to putt with it occasionally when I'm up against the collar. If it could dance and had a rich daddy I would marry it.

I am not a fan of hybrids either! I carry 5 wood/2 iron depending on the situation and always carry a 3 and 4 iron. I tried numerous makes and models and none of them suited me. To each thier own, but I'm sticking with long irons.

I've yet to play with a hybrid in my bag, my irons do just fine but I've been contemplating buying one for those trouble shots in the rough w/ 200+ yards to carry. The few times I've used them (pulling from a friends bag) I've hit them well. The modified head shape really seems to carry velocity through the thick stuff.

I'm thinking of buying a fairly cheap (Slazenger) Raw distance 3i. But seeing winters on the horizon I will keep my eyes peeled for a good deal on E-Bay for a Taylor Made or other reputable brand. I will say my Slazenger 3w and 5w are very well build and solid striking clubs.

I can't hit a hybrid with less than 25* of loft at all, The 9 wood I carry fits the niche that most people carry a hybrid for I guess.

try to pick up a taylormade rescue dual tp. they fly lower than irons and have roughly the same distance. its a real players club but works well in deep wet rough

Anyone who claims to be able to hit a 2 iron but not a hybrid is having himself on big time. There are millions of articles and forums which go into detail about how to hit a hybrid. Not that it is hard - just hit down on the ball. And the idea that someone can't hit a hybrid off a handicap of 2 is laughable. Hybrids are extremely versatile and a great advancement in golf technology. If you can't hit one, you have serious technique problems. And if you have serious technique problems, you can't hit a 2 iron.

When the OP, Pingman said that his coach told him he had the swing for it, but was dumbfounded that he couldn't hit it - as if there was no logical reason - the solution is pretty obvious. Get a coach who knows something about the game.

"Can't" is relative. Maybe he has higher standards. If you watch the television, we're supposed to be able to drop a hybrid onto the pin from 240 yards and have it stop on a dime. If that isn't the typical result it must not be working.

I can occasionally do that with a 2-iron but I usually take a glance up into the clouds and say thank-you. More likely it runs through the green or comes up short - that's okay because the bar is set pretty low with a 2.

As you can see from my sig I bought into the hybrids. As a digger with irons the hybrids is a much better club for me. The best shots I have hit have come from my metals. I have seen that other companies do not use the fairway wood metaphor and instead use the mega cavity super sole idea and then some fill in the cavity from the topline to the sole with a plastic cap. I like the fairway wood look, it gives me more confidence in hitting the ball. If you are an iron guy then maybe you should focus on the hybrids that do not look like fairway woods.
I am enjoying my 5 wood too. What I now need to do is decide if my 5 wood makes my #3 hybrid redundant and if my #6 hybrid makes my 6 iron redundant. My next DR trip will be a shootout!

I carry a 3 and 4 Nickent 3DX hybrid sometimes. Much easier to hit than long irons.

i thought i was the only one who couldnt hit a hybrid untill i found this site a while back. my buddy has a much worse swing than me and he can smash his hybrid all over the place. its weird.

i cant hit one to save my life neither... i always either duck hook it or hit it sky high with a ball flight that resembles a PW.

and i can hit my 2 iron just fine off the fairway... but i mostly just hit knockdowns with it when my driver gets me in trouble...

could be a mental thing because i'm so used to being able to hit long irons quite well...
