The only way I could get my handicap down to 10 was to play within my limitations. So I decided to stick with the longest club that I consistently hit straight, 7i. Even off the tees, 150 yards. You are the laughing stock until scores are tallied.

i've played with the bare minimum, driver, 5 iron, sw, and putter. shot 4 over on 18 on my home course. most fun i had ever had playing and it's a great experience. it felt like an accomplishment.

I´d love to see the greenkeeper´s reaction when he finds you putting with a 5 iron...

I've never known that to be a problem unless one is chipping with an iron. Putting with an iron you usually try to belly the ball, meaning that the club is about 3/4" off the grass. It's actually less likely to stub that shot than it is if you are using a putter.

Personally I enjoy playing with odd numbered clubs one round, then even numbered the next. One day I used 4, 6, 8, pw and putter. The next time out I used 3, 5, 7, 9 and putter. No driver, no wedges. For the last 3 years I've done this a few times at the beginning of the season just to work on getting the cobwebs off. I started because I got tired of being 270 - 290 in the short stuff and not being able to hit a green. Now it's just for fun

Played first 4 holes in the back 9 with only my gap wedge and I was 2-over. I can skull my gap wedge about 150 yards.

I take no divots with a putting stroke, regardless of the club.

A company I worked for had a two club tourney every year. I used a 4 iron and (I think) a 9 iron when I came in second. I putted the ball playing lefty using the back side of the 4 iron. A guy I played with suggested that I should putt that way all the time.

My friend wanted to play a game where our tee shots are our shortest (lengthwise; besides putter) off the tee. 2nd shortest for our 2nd shot. And so on and so forth. I told him that was the stupidest thing he's ever said and continued to play regular.

Played 9 holes with my 14 year old son and 8 year old daughter. I played with 5 clubs, ( 15 degree fairway wood, 5 iron, 9 iron, PW and putter) and shot 3 over.

My son shot 10 over and my daughter shot 46 or 19 over par with 27 putts on shorten tee boxes playing 1,022 approximate yards.

Swedish Player Johan Edfors played a medium hard Swedish Golf course with only a 6 iron (no putter or SW) a shot a 78. Pretty impressive.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
