Got a new putter, Odyssey White Hot Sabertooth. It's my first putter with an insert. I love it. The sight-line works great for me. The line I see is the one the ball travels. However, I'm struggling with the distance. (coming from a blade putter that I've used for tooo long.)

Anything inside of 8ft is fine. But when I go for the 15'+ putt, it's a hope and a dream.

Any advice to learning distance for a putter????

Thanks in advanced.

Its all tempo and length of your backswing and forward swing that helps you judge distance. Practice putting at 10, 15, 20 feet distances or use your feet as a measurement scale to help you judge distances.

Inside of your rear sole as one distance
middle of your rear foot
outside your rear foot
3 inches outside your rear foot

If you keep you same tempo you should hit your putts the same distance if you repeat the same putt with the above backswing.

practice hitting putts and hit three putts the same distance with 3 inches of each other.

Practice practice practice.
Work on getting it near the hole if you cannot sink it everytime.

Great advice.

Yesterday, I spent a bunch of time practicing with it. Today, my putting was improved. I still need to keep practicing but at least I'm going in the right direction. I love the "feel" of this putter.

Thanks guys.

Here is a little secret many people never have heard off... (Atleast I didn't until I went to an academy) try taking off your grip and pouring salt down into the shaft... It makes the putter heavy and lets you make some good medium strokes that travel a little farther than normal...

PS dont try to use sand, it is way to heavy...

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
