This weekend, I played 9 and initially was pushing and slicing the heck out of the ball. In fact I must have hit 5 balls off the first tee in frustration (course was dead, no one was waiting).

I was thinking I am not coming around enough, which is resulting in an open club face at impace. I already was using a strong grip, so I did not change that.

What I did was move my left foot back a few inches, but kept them parallel to the target line. So it was not like a traditional open stance where your feet actually angle to the left, my front foot was just back a bit. That fixed it right up. In fact the draw I learned to hit a few weeks earlier came right back. I was really killing the ball for the rest of the round.

Question is, does anyone think this is masking for another defect? I try hard not to cast, and keep a low "flight path". I try to release at the correct time. But this simple little foot change seemed to fix everything.

I tried this same technique after reading another post here at TST and it also worked for me. Be interested in hearing what the experts say.

How do you move your left foot back from the line parallel to the target and keep your feet parallel to the target? Are you saying your hips and shoulders are square to the target and your feet are just slightly open?

Anyway, Fred Couples plays with an open stance and seems to do OK.

Im sorry I believe I meant feet are perpendicular to the target line.

You may be seeing immediate results, but I don't think it's a good idea. I imagine that this will help you square up the clubface, but in the long term you may be sacrificing power and just solidifying bad habits. I would keep the feet in line with each other and revisit the fundementals.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
