Its cold as Hades here right now. 2* above zero but feels like -20*.

Anyway I'm done lurking and have decided to join. Some may know me as zaphod from the Shottalk.com forum. This looked like a well run forum also so I decided to join in the conversation.

I've been golfing since I was 14 yo. And have just keep increasing my addiction levels. Golf has been a wide ride for me. Within the last 2 years I have been 2 below par and 28 above par (both for 18 holes).

I am a golf club ho also; 6 sets of irons. 5 putters. 3 flavors of wedges. multiple hybrids and a driver for each day of the week. I also build those clubs myself to keep me occupied during times of "no golf"

Looking forward to an interesting time meeting all you SandTrappers

BTW this site is perfectly matched to my Mantra---Sand is my friend!!!!

MadTown---I graduated from UW-Madison. My Daughter too. She and SIL live just east of the 16th green at University Ridges near PD. Their apt can be seen from the east edge of that green. They are currently looking to buy in Prairie du Sac so the Wisconsin Country Club will probably come into play too.

Anyway I'm down there quite often to golf--Now Vitense but during season at most of the MadTown courses. The Oaks , Legends, University Ridges, Yahara Hills, Odana, Pleasant View, Tumbledown, Bridges are all in play. Also get to Wild Rock, Trappers Turn, Meadows @ 6 mile creek, and Northern Bay. Love those Madison courses.

I love Madison. Im a few blocks away from State Street. I try to make it out to Vitense as much as I can. I tend to play courses a little south of Madison simply because they are cheaper, but next year Im planning on playing more of the Madison city courses.
Id love to play University Ridge but its a little on the pricey side.

What was I thinking asking about Men's BBall tickets--Looked at your sig and I see Hockey. I have not made a Kohl Center hockey game but I did attend many games at the Coliseum. At that time the men's and women's head coaches played on the same team. 1973-1977. Mike Eaves at center ice set points records and Mark Johnson as winger. He was awesome scorer. Such a wicked slapper off a hard pass. 2 national NCAA rings. And a BEER GARDEN open to students between periods. Did I already say???---AWESOME.

Viroqua Hills is a decent course, I am not a fan of forest hills so much. If you want to play a really nice course without dropping a lot of money, try the mountain in trempleau. Probably the nicest course around for the money, they usually run a special in the summer for 18 holes and a cart for around 30-35 dollars.

I've never been to Wisconsin, but I used to watch Happy Days until Fonzie moved his office into the washroom. The term for the death of a TV series shouldn't be "Jumped the Shark" (another Fonzie moment). It should be, "Desk in the Crapper".

Anyway, is there really a "Wiscons Inn"?

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
