Lob wedge or Not?

OP already has 58, so if you want a LW it would be a 62 or 64... doubt a 60 would help himtoo much.

In your sig it says you have a "Vokey 258.12". What is that??? I have several Vokey wedges, and I've never seen a "258". If that is a typo and it's supposed to be 58.12, then I don't know why you would look at a LW. 58° is already in LW range. You do have a gap from 50° to 58°, so it seems to me that a 54° would fill that gap and be of more use to you.

With a 58 and a 64 you actually have 2 lob wedges. Why would you need 2 of them? If you are like some of the higher handicappers that I've played with, you may well be using them too much and in the process actually hurting your game.

I personally don't even carry a LW. My 56° is the highest lofted club in my bag, and it more than serves the purpose. I try not to leave myself in that danger zone of 50 to 20 yards out. I either lay up shorter (70-100 yards) or I am expecting to be green high with only a short chip or pitch left.

same Q about the 258... assumed you had a 58... 54 would be perfect choice if you have 58 already... would be nice gaps then.

I decided to go with a 58 and get the 50 bent to 51 or 52 but that will happen later.
This leaves me with 13 clubs. Either i dont bend the 50 and get a 54, or bend it and grab a Cleveland Launcher DST 5 Wood. Neither will happen in the near future---just wishful thinking.

Haha sorry. Its the Vokey 200 series and on the back of the club, its says 258.12.

The 58 is a 56/14 bent to 58. I use it as my sand wedge.

I went with this set up because I was able to pull off better shots around the green with a 64 vs a traditional 60. It is very well possible I use it way too much. With alot of work on my swing this winter so far I hope to work on the course management/short game aspects this spring/summer/fall.

I've got a handicap similar to yours. I used to play a 58 with a 5-wood, but I dumped the 5-wood that I hit maybe once a round at most for a 51, 56 & 60 wedge set and I like it much more. I'd either get a 54 or get the 58 bent back to 56 and get a 60. I don't like wedges past 60 for anyone not named Phil Mickelson, they're just too tough to hit for the minimal benefit you get over a standard 60-degree wedge. Around the green, I use the 56-degree wedge 80% of the time. If I've got a ton of green to work with, I'll bump & run a pitching wedge, and if I've got a bunker shot or no green at all, I use the 60.

I am a fan of lob wedges just because they are great for getting out out of trouble with. Mark B

With wedges, the higher the loft, the more I need to practice to be effective. When I used a 60 deg I had to constantly practice chip for feel or else I hit it thin and chunked it. I use a 58 deg now and I still have to practice a lot. If I just use the SW it's easier to hit (but offers fewer shot options).

IMO, the LW is a specialty club. I carry one and use it in green side bunkers and for when I short side myselft and need minimal roll out, or just no roll out. I'm starting to use it more from 70 and in, again when I don't want roll out, or very little. My LW has taken more practice than my other wedges and I've found that how ever hard you think you should hit the ball, hit it a little harder.

If you can and / or comfortable opening up a SW then the need for a LW is less.
