Exactly what the title said, I have R7 Draws right now , it was what I was looking for in the summer. But now that I've gotten much better with my iron play, I'm looking to get away from game improvement to something that gives me more control. I really don't know what to look for, I would like to try blades.

I've only demoed the Callaway X-20's so far, I loved the control I had with them. I could make it do a fade, straight, draw, what ever I wanted I loved that.

I'm also looking at the Cobra S2 Forged Irons, all suggestions are welcome.

My budget is maximum $700.

In my Tourino Stand Bag:
Driver: S9-1 F 9.5º Aldila DVS-HL S Flex Shaft
5 - Wood: 1200 Gear Perfect (being upgraded next year)
Irons: R7 Irons 4-PW
Balls: GamersWedge: 60.08º Vokey Spin Milled Wedge - Oil Can

Try to score a new or slighty used set of Mizunos on ebay. I just got a very nice used set of mp60's on ebay for a steal. Cut muscle, half blade half cavity back.

I have never been a big fan of the Callaway Irons but its about you not me.

Tryout some Titleist forged and the Mizzies... The Cleveland CG7 tour black pearls look pretty sweet. Try them too and report back, I'm curious abt them. Lol.

if you want forged irons for less than 700 i would look into ebay, there's plenty of sellers with great feedback. you could find the 08 Titleist AP2 on ebay and they should fit your budget. If you want less of a game improvement club I would look into the X-20/X-22 Tour versions as well.

For $700 quit wasting your time on the internet and go see a professional for a fitting and spend a few days hitting everything they've got to find what best suits your game. You might be surprised by what you learn about your swing and what equipment really fits it and you.

This is great advice. For one, its fun. Two, its the only way to figure out what you really need. Before I bought my MP57s, I told myself I wasn't going to waste money on another set I 'thought' was for me. I hit dozens of irons and these were in my top 3 and $500 cheaper than the next cheapest option.

Extensively demo-ing sets is the only way to go IMO. No reason to spend money on clubs that still aren't what you need...

so you go get fit, demo some clubs and head back to where the deals are.... online. I got fit and demo'd a ton of clubs and bought mine online for less than half of the price in the store. The worst part about spending $700 on some irons is seeing them somewhere else for less.

Lots of great buys right now at Callaway Preowned if your thinking of Callaway's. Good advice also is to be very careful with places like eBay. Lots of counterfeits, on every brand. Buy from someplace that is either a certified dealer or from someone/someplace you know and trust (like here).

Since you have a 5 HDCP, why not try the X20 Tour and X22 Tour models? They have smaller heads, and would be crisper out of the rough.

X20 Tour has slightly lower Vertical Center of Gravity the X22T. So, if you get the ball up OK, the X22 Tour might be easier to use when hitting knockdowns or lower shots. Both the Tour models give excellent feedback on impact. I tried both, but don't quite have the swing yet. You do.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Thanks for the advice, I will try and demo the X-20/22 Tours, Mizuno MP-60's, '08 Titleist AP2...(along with the Cobra S2 Forged) but the only problem is finding a place that has left handed versions of these >.<

It's a pain in the ass, lol.

And I had every intention of getting my clubs fitted and what not, I'm not going to spend $600-$700 on irons and not have them be perfect for me, lol.

I've hit the Ping i15's lately. You ought to give them a look. Players club with a fair amount of forgiveness.

Longer irons are bigger and more forgiving. Shorter irons are smaller and more workable.

Exactly what the title said, I have R7 Draws right now

I ordered a set of X20 Tours from Callaway Preowned last week for $421. LOVE them!! That included 1.25" ext, 2 deg up lie, and jumbo grips. If you shop there, "like new" is brand new in my experience (7 orders). I ordered two FT hybrids for $150 yesterday. Got a FT-9 Tour driver for $240 last week. Got a FT 3W and 5W an hour ago for $107 each ($250 clubs). Can't be Callaway Preowned.

That's good. If you're budgeting up to $700 for just your irons you'd be doing yourself a major disservice by not going through a proper fitting and then getting the clubs to those specs.

Those forged Cobras do look good, don't they? My advice is, of course, do the fitting, outdoors if any way possible where you can observe your ball flight as well as what the fitter and launch monitor tell you, and go with your instincts on look and feel when you get down to the final 2-3 candidates, even if one brand 'fits better' according to the computer. For example, I like to feel (or think I can feel) some flex or softness in the shafts I play,, So I play R shafts in my irons even though the computer says play Stiff (they feel like a board to me, maybe because I'm on the cusp of swing speed for S and I don't want to go full-bore on many iron shots). Anyway point is: Don't ignore the aesthetics and sensory side of your new sticks. Good Luck with your quest.

You have got to check out the new Taylormade R 9 or R9 TP...I am currently playing the R 9 (non TP) as I have no desire to work the ball on full shots but rather hit the ball fairly straight and with consistent distance (so I know what club to hit on each shot). I made the mistake of listening to two different instructors over the past year and a half and have gone through two sets of clubs with lessons and my ball striking had not improved one bit...along with a recent change to the S&T; swing and the purchase of the R 9 irons I am loving my ball striking again...I would definitely add them to your list...

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
