Me and a few buddies of mine are heading down Myrtle for about a week in the middle of January what are some of the better courses down there for the money.

In my Bag
Driver-Taylormade R11 TP Fujikura Blur Stiff 65g shaft

the only courses I have played (and really liked) or have heard good things about are...

Caledonia and True Blue are top notch... especially Caledonia
4 Legends courses are supposed to be good... and Oyster Bay
All the Barefoot Resort courses are good... especially Love course
The Witch is a nice less expensive course

You are going in January so bring some warm clothes as it will be cold in the morning.Caledonia and Tru Blue are both great but VERY expensive unles you book through your hotel.Try Heritage or go up North a little and you have Tigers Eye or Rivers Edge Thistle or if you are really on a budget mid January the Sun News Online has cupons for most of the courses in the Myrtle area.Usually by the end of January they are boosting the prices so call ahead and ask.Stay away from the courses in Myrtle itself such as Waterway and Possum trot as these allthough nice are not why you drove from Ohio.Just over the border in NC has a load of nice courses Oyster Bay The pearls Crow Creek Carolina national.Pick up the Fodors places to play book and play 4 stars or better.

I've only played around Myrtle Beach once, and the only course I played was Long Bay club. I remember it was pretty ok, but probably not worth driving from Ohio for. That was 5 years ago and I really don't remember it much.

I'm going in May with a group. We're on a bit of a budget. We're booked for:
2 rounds at Heritage
2 rounds at Legends
1 round at Oyster Bay

If you play any of those be sure and post a trip report. :)

And Advice on Myrtle Beach National Courses we were thinking of playing atleast on of them. And we already got a tee time at Long Bay.

I have never been a big fan of Kings North as I think for the same money you can play The Dunes or one of the Barefoots {my favorite is the Fazio}.But a lot of people swear by the MBN courses so go figure.It has been real rainy there the last few weeks so beware of the Witch even though it is a great course it is the worst draining course in all of Myrtle and will be CPO till July {just joking} but it will be wet.

All of the courses in Pawley's area are excellent.

Heritage, Caledonia, True Blue, and Pawley's Plantation are my favorite four south. They are traditional and georgeous.

The Legends courses are so-so. I hate links courses.

Barefoot is just so-so. The Fazio and Norman courses stink. Love's course is fine, but not very asthetic.

Wachesaw Plantation East = Amazing
Wild Wing Plantation (Avocet course is the best) Biggest practice facility I've ever seen.
River Club = Fun and short and lots of water - great greens.
Long Bay = TOUGH
Litchfield CC = old school

To name a few. These are always on our regular play list.

Have a ball and make sure to eat a steak at "Chuck's" and spend a couple bucks at a place called "Masters".

Wild Wing was torn apart only left with 27 holes 4 years ago and the practice range now sucks.Wachesaw Litchfeild--River Club Long bay--are all B courses as far as the locals are concerned.Chucks is the best Steak house on the strand.I can not see why you would not like Fazio course as it is a shot makers dream.Only 2 courses at legends are links the Parkland is a old time through the woods type course.

The Legends courses are so-so. I hate links courses.

how can you hate links courses? I miss playing the couple links courses I used to play in Michigan and Ohio... they have a few immitations in NC, but nothing that actually plays even close to a links course. A true links course is a real treat.

I completely disagree too... the Fazio course is great.

Wanted to throw this out there, I have developed a web site that maps courses around the country. You can rate and add pictures and comments of your days on the green. Great timing!

Me and a buddy are also planning a trip in January or February. We are going to visit a friend in Columbia SC and are planning on stopping in Myrtle for a couple of days.

We are on kind of a budget since i am currently unemployed.

Have played several over the past 15 years. Always like Tidewater, but heard it has gone downhill recently. Played Wild Wing (Avocet) over Thanksgiving and it was in very good condition. You didn't ask about cost, but I will tell you there are deals to be had. I took my 2 boys and payed $80 total for all 3 of us (including carts). Call the clubhouses of those you are interested in and you may find some unadvertised specials. Really wanted to play Kings North but didn't want to shell out the bucks for 3 of us. Good luck, please report back.

Kings north is great course but has slow greens. Tidewater used to be the 2nd best course in all of MB for my money...i haven't played it in a couple years. The last 3 years we have stayed dwon south in Pawleys Island. Our group loves it there...Caledonia is a must play...36 holes do the rebuy!! What a fantastic golf course!!! True blue is very good, founders club is also good. The love course at Barefoot is nice.

We ended up getting tee times at long bay and MBN West we are going to find a course to play sunday when we get down there. Really hope the weather cooperates for us cant be any worse than in ohio.

I have played several of the courses.. but I feel like the best deal, for straight up golf, nothing fancy, was Possum Trot. Especially for a cheap afternoon round to break up the cost of some of the higher end courses.

      It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…

      I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
