When we recently moved into our new apartment downtown my gf was away in europe for 11 weeks on business when I did the move (ya nice of me to do it alone i know).

I got all the important things unpacked, the Plasma, the computer, digital cable box, surround sound, couches, coffee table. Rest of the stuff sat in boxes in various rooms in the apartment.

It was the middle of summer and i had just got a 60* and wanted to work on putting and chipping so i set up a little chipping area down the carpeted hallway and putting in the living room.

Moving boxes make great backstops for stopping errant chips, which I only learned after I put a golf ball dent in the hallway after skulling one.

Needless to say gf was a little confused when she came back and there was close to 50 golf balls kicking around the place. Under couches, in random boxes, in the bathroom under the cupboard.....

We just bought a home with vaulted ceilings, some as high as 12 feet. Problem solved. I can swing my driver in the living room! My wife wasn't too happy when I suggested a net in there...

In my parents' room I use to practice... full swings... but the carpet started to show some black marks like if it was burned or something like that so my parents told me... enough with practicing in the house LOL!

Cheers!

Let's see, I have smashed 2 ceiling lights at work and 1 at home. I have put multiple gashes in a doorframe in the spare bedroom. When I used to swing out on my porch I put a 9-iron through a screen door, demolished some wind chime contraption, and damaged siding on the house. Trying to stick to putting on the carpet now.

I have 9 ft ceilings and I can swing my 5 iron

I have 8' ceilings and can do swing drills with my 6 iron in the family office room. The room is long and narrow, and I have a putting mat strip along one wall. I also do my swing drills over the strip to avoid taking divots out of the rug.

I have the picture of a golf green on the wall at the far end of the room to line up for my swing drills. I used to hide all this stuff when company comes, but leave it in place now.

I'm lucky that I can swing any club in my house. The only time I have done damage is when standing in a doorway and using the wall to make sure my back swing doesn't get too flat. Flat back swing equals a mark on the wall and an unhappy missis! :)

Yep. Plenty of room in the living room. Can't get crazy or anything but I can swing the whole bag. Have to keep from taking a divot out of the rug though! Do more putting than anything. Would like to have a hitting net in the garage but wife is worried we'll break, dent, destroy something.

I bought a kid club set for my 5 year daughter. It turns out that I was using it more than she did at home since it was short enough for our ceiling.

I do practice 1/2 swings with 9 iron from time to time. Of course when I'm getting hang of it, it becomes 2/3 swing and I have a few clipping marks on the ceiling.

"During our weekly Lamaze class, the instructor emphasized the importance of exercise, hinting strongly that husbands need to get out and start walking with their wives. From the back of the room one expectant father inquired, "Would it be okay if she carries a bag of golf clubs while she walks?"

In 35 years I've only had one incident that involved a golf club and a house, but this happened in the summer time outside. I was about 12 years old I was swimming in our pool and I jumped out still soaking wet and decided to give a golf club a few swings before I dried off and went inside. It was an old wedge that my brother and I used to pitch around the yard and the grip was really worn down and pretty slick.

As I swung the club, to my suprise it went flying out of my hands and smashed into a window in the back of the house. Needless to say my father was not to happy, but thankfully he didn't take my clubs away.

It was a dumb-kid not thinking type accident, but miraculously as much as my brother and I hit balls in the yard and around the house, that window was the only thing that every got broken!

Fortunately, I can swing any club in my house (9' ceiling). However, I imprinted 7 iron on a newly painted wall (less than a week) by accident. Still, I hit foam balls from living room to family room and my dog loves to fatch the balls. Nothings been broken with the foam balls so far.

Happened to me just about three days ago

I have a spot in the house that I can swing and not break stuff, at least if I use a PW or 9I or something short. The other day, however, my lazy-a__ dog was laying right in my swing spot. Turns out he's old and blind, so I feel kinda bad for the guy, and didn't want to make him move.

So, like an idiot, I not only decided to move to the dining room, I decided to swing a 5W around as well.

No surprise what happened - took a backswing and completely shattered the glass fixture on the hanging light/chandelier thing. Took a bunch of little dents out of the expensive dining room table and got glass everywhere .

Can't wait for spring around here.

The stuff in my bag (i.e. The clubs that I haven't tossed in the pond. Yet.):

What an entertaining thread.

I've never had hitting-the-ceiling issues, or even close. That's either because our ceilings are pretty high or it's because my swing is much too flat - or a bit of both.

About 5 yrs ago when we moved into our spanking new abode my wife was very nervous about my doing damage to furniture or walls etc. She is now much more relaxed about the whole thing. Is that because I haven't caused significant damage yet, because the house is that much older and she cares less, or because she's (very sensibly) just given up worrying about something beyond her full control?

No, it's the cats that I really worry about. One false move in the family room with the 3-hybrid and one's a gonner .....

Later: Parker, your post reminded me of something. Aged about 15 I was swinging an iron of some kind in the small back yard of my father's condo in England. I did this safely for about ten minutes and suddenly and most unexpectedly made clean contact with a small stone that had managed to hide itself in the grass. It made a neat little hole in the window to the dining room that I had been facing, maybe 25 feet away. My father was not amused.

Not strictly in the house but close enough. Came back from the pub in the early hours with a friend who was kipping on my couch as his wife had chucked him out. Both a bit worse for the drink we decided to get some golf practice in.Standing on the front porch we were betting each other on our golfing skills.
"Bet you cant hit a nine iron over that roof opposite"
Bet you cant hit a 3 wood between those houses
Bet you cant do a flop shot into the nieghbours trash

As you can imagine it wasnt long before half the street was awake and the police turned up
"Have you got any drugs on you sir" one copper asked my mate "No offsir I have done all the drugs but can offer you a beer" ,,,, "OK sir I am going to have to take your name",,,,,"Why dont you like your own"

We were let off with a warning and went indoors. The next day was spent appologising to nieghbours and fixing broken tiles, one smashed window and a you should have seen the state of the guys opposite truck, that was definatly my mate as I remember him saying he was topping the ball with his driver!

Many years ago my brother was practicing his chipping down the hallway of his apt, he start with small chips thaen graduated up to 3/4 swings and took a huge divot out of the carpet, his mrs went absolutely crazy.

I have never attempted anything more that putting in the house, we have a room that we call the kids tv room/den that measures around 14x14, I am trying to talk my wife into letting me put in a simulator like the one they have in the golf stores, my 12 year old daughter is taking lessons and is very keen on the game and she a a beautiful swing, her coach says that if she really wanted to she could go all the way and be very good if not a pro, so I am working on that angle to talk the wife into getting one put in, that would be awesome!!!

    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
