A golf ball struck against an anvil would pretty subdued - or do you mean sombody shaping heated metal with a hammer and anvil?

Yes I mean the sound of a blacksmith shaping hot metal with a hammer on an anvil, eg making horse shoes!! It's interesting as it seems to me that having such a loud and particularly unpleasing sound doesn't reflect the (hopefully) stylish move we hope to make on the tee. To my mind, it suits to have a sweet, subtle (if possible) noise, rather than the noise of construction work when setting out on the golf course.

I used to own a Cleveland HiBore XLS and I loved the thing except the sound. It made this really loud noise of someone hitting a aluminuml bat. It really irritated me to no end and my best friend almost refuses to play a round if I bring it.

I used to have a Launcher 400 and that thing was the loudest driver in the history of the game..... Sounded like it exploded every tee shot.... Subsequently (sp) got rid of it, but it was pretty cool to take to the driving range and have peoplee look at it like it was some sort of weapon of mass destruction... LOL I like the sound of the Titleist drivers and the Ping I15 didn't sound too shabby either.

I was same....until I tested Callaway FT-i.....I didn't care how well I could hit with this as sounds were really embarrasing and displeasing, just like kicking a trash can.

I borrowed my dad's FT-iQ a couple months ago. Loved how it hit, hated how it sounded like a cow bell. I mean, cow bell is cool and all, but I don't normally play Blue Öyster Cult on the course...

Really?

It's what golf needs, now, more than ever.

my driver sounds great. not loud not dull either. just a perfect "ping" haha. i despise nike drivers, sound like s#!t in my opinion. so do some callaway's. or maybe it was just the few guys i've played with but the hyper x sounds like doodoo too. just me speaking my mind. the older clevelands, well everything before the launcher dst, were just horrid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! taylormade, of course being known for their drivers, make gerat sounding clubs as do titleist. adams speedline have a nice little sound too them as well. mizuno, well, i've only hear one, but it didn't sound good, however this can be biased since i don't know what model it was, i just the a blue headcover.

My buddy had a blue rage which was loud as hell, I still have an MP-001 that has a muted sound but is definately off a little because of the composite crown

How would you rate the MP 001 for a newish golfer, I know they can be bought pretty cheap now, or do you reckon they are bit outdated now?

Anyone have any opinion on sounds of Callaway x460 or Big Bertha 454?

I have a Cleveland Comp in the bag, and I'm surprised how much I like the sound of it. Maybe it's a pitch thing, but most other sticks I've tried out have been irritatingly loud. I hit a square once... Don't think I'll be doing that, again. *heh*

Kinda funny to me; I've tried out a pretty wide range of drivers, but haven't come across one yet that makes me want to abandon my $40 used Cleveland Comp.

Currently in my bag:  Under Revision

Many of the component companies have started using methods of dampening the sound from their square and composite drivers, as it's one of the few selling points they have over the OEMs. The major names don't really care, as they can sell clubs based on their name alone. As I said, the issue is somewhat complex, but for the most part, the composite (Cobra & Cleveland) and square (Nike Sumo², Callaway FT-i) do sound awful.

Totally agree.

X460 and BB 454 are on the loud side... I like the 454. The MP001 is a decent driver, I had no problem with the club itself just the shaft that was in it. If your going to buy one, get the 460 version and get a shaft that is right for you. Club head is less important to me than the shaft.

My old persimmon woods still sound the best.

Which is the best sounding ball and persimmon combination? I miss the sound of a wound ball, but the Wilson Eco Core has a nice soft sound.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.
