Next year will be my last year of High School Golf, steps toward College Golf scholarship?

Alright, so before I continue on, yes I know a golf scholarship is a tall order and I realize that I'm a little late on the consideration about seeking one. Basically throughout my High school career ive averaged low forties. Do I think that's good enough? Nah.. not for a second, even though the last month or two i've been slowly shaving down my scores to the high 30's, it's still not my average, and I believe colleges (at least good ones) will only really care about offering players a scholarship if seen shooting at least even to under par, so my question is this:

1. What steps should I start taking to get my game more polished if I want a chance at this? What areas should I work the most my last remaining year or so?

2. I understand colleges love seeing wins outside of school, and they wanna see you post competitive scores in outside tournies. But since I'm in a critical timing issue, when exactly should I partake in these tournaments? I don't think i'm consistent enough yet to place well, so should I work on getting down to an average of 36 or so and around the summertime (4 to 5 months from now for me) sign up in tournaments? I'll go use all the work ethic I have to get my game sharper, I live on a golf course in the Tampa area with two ranges, unlimited membership so all the tools are here, I'm friends with the course pros that would be more than glad to help out, as well as the course owner (retired PGA player, Jerry Heard, had that one lightning strike injury with Trevino back in the 70's or something?).

3. Am I late to consider all this? I honestly love the sport of golf but for some reason I guess the possibility of playing for a college just slapped me in the face now. I love the idea of it, but I don't wanna get over my head if I'm out of time. I honestly think I could, I wouldn't have one problem with dedicating all this to the fullest.

Although if there's anyone out there that has experience with any of this, a friend or relative who pursued a college golf career or possibly yourself, i'd highly appreciate the advice!! Thanks again.

What school do u play for? If your at brandon or east bay....good luck. If you are at plant or wharton you have a decent chance.

I think you could easily play for USF...but no money is coming out of them for golf.

Im just curious. I went to Armwood so I was just seeing where you go. We had a girl I graduated with in 06 named Stefanie Smith and she was very good. She got a scholarship to FGCU and ended up leaving after her sophomore year.

Give me about 15 mins and I could probably guess where you play lol j/k bro. The only reason I ask is because some school in Hillsborough county have better golf programs. I know with Golf being an individual sport that really
doesnt matter, but it does help. I was the smallest offensive lineman at Armwood High when I was a senior at 6'3 275 bs. The only reason some schools looked at me was because they came to a practice to look at other guys and happened to notice me. Also, just another tip on the recruiting process....My mom and I sent lots of tapes to schools I thought would be cool to go to. Emailed coaches and whatnot and tried to sell myself. I ended up having a coach fly down from Boston to watch me practice and he flew me up to the school for a visit. I ended up not liking the school, but it was still an opportunity. I think you are probably good enough to go to a college to walk on and maybe with the correct coaching and practice you could earn yourself a scholarship. You just have to want it. Best of luck bro.

I went to college for baseball at a private D-III school in PA...(D-III's don't offer athletic scholarships) throw your name out there to them if you want to also...it's amazing how much 'academic' money out there is to be had in scholarships. Don't get me wrong I graduated with a 3.2 cum BUT I didn't have it my first two years and magically had a scholarship. just sayin it might be worth your while...even for a first year to hone your skills a bit more with coaching as well as just extra time for you to maybe transfer...?

opinion...we had 2 golfers on our team (mind you this is D-III) who were about a 9 or so...I only know this b/c i've played against them in a friendly at a course near school and beat one, and lost by 2 to the other...

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
