All,

I'm considering getting fitted for some GI/SGI irons (6-PW) & wondering if you have any recommendations. I will hopefully make it to the Golf Show (weather permitting) this weekend where I will hopefully be able to hit some clubs. I'm thinking about the Mizuno MX-1000, Callaway Diablo, Taylor Made R9s, Titlest AP1.

Any comments or recommendations?

thanks!

Go to the Callaway Preowned website and get a set of Big Bertha irons. Many year models to choose from and little difference between them. Don't assume that newer is better. I have ordered here many times and this is a great way to score some clubs. I recently got the X20 Tours, but hit the Big Bertha Golds (1994-ish) for years. VERY easy to hit clubs. I also recently got some Callaway FT hybrids and man, these clubs are incredible!! I have the 3 and 4 FT hybrid. That works like a charm in my set up. I use the 5 iron up on the X20 Tour irons. Food for thought at any rate.

Id go with a set of Callaway Big Berthas or anything in the Mizuno MX line. Id forget about the Titleist AP1s, Titleists arent game-improvement clubs.

Ralph Maltby puts out a yearly list of irons and other clubs measured by his own scale, the Maltby Playability Factor. This scale rates clubs by taking measurements, like center of gravity, moment of inertia, etc. These lists are very accurate on how easy a club is to hit. If you see some irons you like, you can find them on his list, and see where they stand.

The Callaways nearly always top the list of OEM clubs, and the Big Berthas, even ones that are ten years old, are often some of the best. TaylorMade didn't do too well, Mizuno was not great, but decent.

I've been hitting clubs for a while trying to make a similar decision. My short list was the MX-100, Cally X-22, Ping G-10. I was waiting for the G15's to come out then I bought a house so I had to wait. I'm hoping to buy something early this year (once my old house sells). Last night I was comparing the X-22 to the Diablo Edge. They are very similar. Personally, I liked the MX-100 but didn't like the MX-950 nor did I like the MX-1000 (hit them both inside Golfsmith and on the range at a Demo day). Most of my clubs are Taylor Made but I just don't seem to like the feel of the R9 or the '09 Burner. I hit the AP1 at a demo day and was very surprised. It was raining that day so I expected to have problems hitting them....I didn't, they were great. I'm going to take a serious look at the AP1's before I buy anything. Eventually I relized that the clubs that I like (excpet the AP1) were all very similar. My advice, hit what you can, create a short list. By the time you have a short list you'll discover that you can't go wrong with any of them IMHO.

Please do yourself (and your pocket) a favour and just try Bridgestone J36 PC with Project X 5.0 flighted shafts. I tried all the clubs in this treadand nothing come even close to J36 PC.

All,

Diablo: In comparing clubheads for metal mass, Diablo appears to fall between Big Bertha and X22 models. This is by visual; I did not hit them. AP1: Test hit last year; probably could work the ball better than other three mentioned.

I'm a big fan of the Taylor Made R9's, but mostly the TP version, which you don't seem to be after. I do also like the Mizuno's, the MX 1000's and the MX 200's, and the Titleists, AP 1 and 2.

I played those clubs for many, many years (the Pinnacle version). They are great clubs.

But according to MPF impossible to hit? I just bought another set on ebay D3w 4w 2-9 for $50; couldn't resist.

Yeah, but it merely means they are hard to hit, not impossible. They are top heavy, and very hard to get into the air, that's what accounts for their low MPF. I have the D, 3w, 5w, and 3-PW.

I went out today & hit the X-20s & I liked how they felt. I have a buddy that lives in FL that has the FT I-brids. He said he loves them. I looked for them at a few stores but no one had them. Has anyone hit the FT I-brids?

I'm just looking to game some new irons. For some reason I have grown tired of hitting the A30Ss.

Ping G10 or G15's. Great reviews on these clubs. Plus they have a top notch fitting program. Hope to make a switch to pings myself in another year or so.

    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
