I am in MN and have the itch really bad. How far south to open courses?

You aren't the only one!

First week of March I take off for Alabama on a golf vacation. Right on the Gulf. I would hope that's far enough south.

well, to ensure warm weather, or rather what i call warm, which is above 65, you're going to have to go to miami. however, it rains a lot down there right now. if you can wait til march it'll be really nice here in texas. temps above 60, and it's not as expensive as florida to play good courses. but all the courses south of kentucky i believe are pretty much open year round. the grass just goes dormant, and the greens are slick as all get out.

From about the middle area of Texas and south in the state are pretty much year around play. There may be a few days of cold or rain, or even snow, but after that we are back out playing. The greens in the middle (and of course north) section can be bent grass but in the southern part are mostly Bermuda grass. Bent grass in the winter is typically very fast. We have been pretty consistently around 12. Spring is wonderful... until aeration time.

I'm near the NC/SC border, and as long as you don't mind playing in around 45 degree weather, you can get out in the afternoons right now with no discomfort. It's in the 20's and 30's in the morning, which is a little too cold for me to get out and walk 18 holes.

The way this winter is going you might have to go down to the equator to find a course that hasnt been iced over..

I'm in maryland and I won't be playing golf until june at this rate. I'd love to go south and play but I pretty much can't go anywhere because they don't understand how to plow roads. Although I'm going to be in great shape come golf season from the shoveling.

Why not just fly to South Florida? We have the only guaranteed perfect winter weather.

I'm in Tennessee and it's too cold this week- temps in the upper 30's to low 40's. You may see mid 40's in Alabama. You're better off going to Florida right now.

Last year I was in the Ozarks of Arkansas in late March. Well, w/ my luck, that part of the state literally approached record lows for temperatures while I was down there. I couldn't believe it, but yet, I could. Out of the week I was down there, I had maybe 2 1/2 days of good, nice weather to golf.

I'm hoping southeastern Alabama is going to be a different story. BTW - I've done the Florida trip already. Best weather out of all golfing vacations I've been on. Late February had temps in the 80's. Golfing in shorts and polo shirts. I remember returning to MN off the plane in jeans and a t shirt. Problem was, it was 20 degrees outside.

I live in Fort Smith, AR which is near the southern boundary of the Ozarks, and it's "usually" year-round golf here. With this year's winter though this hasn't been the case. I managed 18 holes yesterday; it was in the high 30's with a steady 5-10 mph wind. A week and a half ago, we got around 4-5 inches of snow followed by 2 or 3 days wehre it stayed well below freezing. It finally all melted around the middle of last week. I thought that was it for the snow for the year, but today we got about 3 inches of snow. I guess I won't be playing this week.....

You have to be further south than Kansas City. We basically have had snow on the ground since Christmas, more snow on Monday and very cold temperatures today.

I am leaving this weekend from snow covered Indiana for Okeechobee FL. and will be there until there's now chance of snow in April around here. It's been in the high 60's to almost 80 there, with rain this week. By March it get's real nice there and I will be hitting it hard. I'm way over and done with all this snow

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
