I seem to have hard time hitting the sweet spot of my driver in the course. In the driving range, i can hit 8 out of 10 sweet shot but on the course, it is usually 3-4 out of 10. When i check my ball mark, it is usually on the heel part of the driver head even though i address at the ball at the toe during setup. I may have moved my body forward on the down swing too much.

When i don't hit the sweet spot, i usually get this nasty vibration that really demoralizes me. The ball seems to go straight most of the time and i can find the fairway, but just that my distance is severely compromised. I only hit about 200 yds when i hit it on the toe.

Should i change to a 3 wood instead? Will it help to train my consistency until i'm able to hit the sweat spot most of the time before i switch back to driver? How much distance in general will i lose between driver and 3 wood assuming both are hitting on the sweet spot?

Thanks.

I would say if you are hitting the fairway with your 3W I would continue to use it until you can get your driver dialed in. Your going to lose some distance hitting the 3W instead but don't worry about that, all you have to do is hit a longer iron. More strokes are made up around the green, so just keep your tee shots in play, and focus on your short game.

stay with the driver and try choking up on the grip until you get more control and make solid contact. I had the same problem before and learn to set up so that I was hitting the ball solid. I started with the ball at the heel of the driver and my swing moved it to center contact. Try using some type of impact tape to see where you are making contact on the driver face on the driving range and go back to basics with your driver swing.

My wedge play and practice helps me find my golf swing

I'd shelve the driver until you are confident with it, and just play the 3wd. No sense in beating yourself up on the course.

If you are hitting it on the heel, my guess is you're coming over the top which moves the club outside. This is what I see anytime guys are setting up with the ball out on the toe and hit it on the heel. Most likely, since you say you hit it OK on the range, you're overswinging on the course. When you swing hard, tendency for most people is to start with the upper body, which leads to the OTT move. Keep hitting drivers on the range, figure out a way to get a steady tempo and good solid shots, then try it on the course.

I say stick with the driver, but figure out why you can't hit the sweet spot on the course.

Just a suggestion - on the driving range, make sure you go through your entire pre-shot routine each time. Tee up the ball. Line up the shot. Take a practice swing or two. Step up and hit it. Watch it. Hold your follow through. When finished, pick up the tee and a ball and step back and stand up for a second. Then walk back to your spot and tee up a new one and repeat. If you do this and can do it repeatedly on the driving range, there's no reason you can't do it on the course.

The 3 wood will have a smaller sweet spot (as normally defined) than the driver.

If your misses go 200 yards and find the fairway, I'd keep hitting the driver...

This....200 yards and straight is fine....stick with it.....it's far too early in the season to give up.....if you are hitting the heel, just sounds like you are a hair to close to the ball, or you are overswinging.....
