just wondering in what situations do you use either wedge?
besides obviously the distance...

currently have a pitching wedge and a 56
debating if i should pick up a 52

Obviouse distances.

Or lately I have been breaking out my 51* for chipping when there is a lot of green between me and the pin. (This time of year greens being punched and very slow. Got sick of my 56* checking up and leaving me short.)

I pretty much only use my 56 for 75 yards or so and out of the sand. Chipping around the green I usually use my 52 or 60, but in general I chip with whatever will get the ball on the green and rolling - 5 iron down to wedge.

My 56 has 14* of bounce, so I use it from the sand and also thicker rough. My 52 has 8* of bounce so I use it from shorter rough/fringe/fairway. Then of course I have my 60*, which I'll use anytime I need to get the ball up quick and/or don't have much green to work with.

I actually consolidated my fairway woods (replaced 3 and 5-woods -which i hit pretty much the same distance anyway- with a 4-wood) so I could carry an extra wedge to close those distance gaps between 80 - 120 yards. Currently carrying a PW (46 deg), 50-deg gap wedge, 54-deg, and 60 deg. Agree with Gibby that most 56-deg "sand wedges" have lots of bounce and can be tough off of tight/firm lies (but easier from the sand or fluffy rough), so i often chip using the 50-deg. esp if there's a fair amount of green to work with.

I almost never hit a full swing with my 56* wedge that is what the 52* wedge is there for (it has lest bounce as well so I can carve the ball of the fairway as opposed to bouncing of it with my 56*). Other than that I tend to use all my wedges (and irons for that matter) for chipping. If you are comfortable hitting a full swing with your 56* I would suggest getting a 60* wedge, I dont know what I would do without my 60* wedge.

I use my 51* from 90-110 yards and around the green if I need to bump it into a hill or something like that. I use my 56* from 90 and in. With the exception of bunkers, 98% of my shots from inside 90 yards are hit with the 56* and putter. I use my 60* out of the bunker unless it's over 15-20 yards.

That's my basic plan. My 56.14 can work off fairway as long as ball's not tight lie / setting on the dirt. High bounce make shot iffy off of tight lie (chance for ricochet and skull).

I carry a 52* and a 58*. My PW is 48*.

I don't think I've taken a full swing with either the 52 or the 58 in some time.

Around the green, I have my 58* in hand 95% of the time. The 52* comes out quite a bit less often. I usually use it for pitches in the 60-80 yard range where I want to bounce/roll up a bit. (To be honest, my 52* and I are not very close. I tend to deloft and punch the thing more than I want.)

I play a 52 and 56. I actually like the 52 for anything 20-80 yds or so. For me, it's a bit more forgiving at those distances. I hit the 56* anywhere 85-105yds.

Around the green it's pretty simple, I hit the 52* the majority of the time. The 56* is used anytime I have to stop the ball immediately, such as flying a bunker to a shortsided pin. I can hit it higher, obviously, but it also spins the ball quite a bit more. I'm just starting to learn about using the different clubs for different conditions as well, so I'll use the 56* more on fast or hard green as well to help control rollout.

Hi all. Been a while since I've posted.

Thanks for the info on 52 vs 56. I've been experimenting with mine (Vokeys) & been concluding that when it comes to straight-forward chips from the fairway, the 52 is much more effective since it has less bounce. Seems my 56 is better for rough or for lob shots.

I was looking for some validation of that & got it. Thanks.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
