has anyone here played college golf?

im wondering what you score has to be to be able to play college golf, for any college D1, D2, or D3

i just wanna play golf at the next level, and i think i am capable of it

im a junior in high school right now and we have a very easy course that our team plays on and at the end of last year i was shooting about 3-5 over through 9 holes (only a 9-hole course)

how much better do i need to get to be able to play golf? rather im a walk-on or scholarship

I play with the UNO golfers pretty regularly.

Their top player is a +5 handicap.

Their worst player is a 1 handicap or so due to how badly he struggles off the tee.

Granted they are a pretty good program ranked in the top 75 or so. In order to play D2 or D3 you don't have to be quite so good.

I played D1 at Holy Cross in Massachusetts. Patriot League teams mostly do walk-on tryouts, no scholarships to my knowledge. Only requirement at HC to try out was 6 handicap or better (everyone who made it was a between +1 and 3 I think). 4 round tryout in late aug/early september. It depends on how many spots need to be filled, but there are usually about 3 or 4 openings on the team for the 10 person roster. If you shot 312 (78 avg over 4 rounds) or better, you were probably safe to make it most years. Everyone on our team was the number 1 on their high school team and was shooting around even for nine holes at the end of high school.

I had a good high school record (37 9-hole scoring avg, AJGA experience, county champ, third team all-state, etc.) and couldn't land a scholarship anywhere. And trust me, I looked around a lot. They are very hard to get and you need to be recognized on the national stage by these coaches (top-10s at AJGA tourneys help). All the schools down south don't even accept walk-ons so a scholarship is a must unless you play up north or for a D2 or D3 school.

If you're serious, PING makes a book with tons of info on college golf. Here is the online edition... http://www.collegegolf.com/collegegolf/

I am a college professor who has taught at a Div. II, an NAIA, and now a Div. III school. Better Div. II programs are all scholarship | NAIA schools give some scholarships, often partials | Div. III is non-scholarship for all sports.

If you play college golf at any level, you must be a good student and a self-starter. You will miss quite a few classes, especially in the spring. So you must play it honest with your professors and keep up academically, be able to knock off assignments during 200-mile bus rides. Most NAIA or Div. III teams have one or two golfers who are former Div. I or II scholarship players. But they had academic problems, and transferred to a less intense golf environment. That said, those who shift to NAIA and Div. III schools without improving their study habits can end up a college dropout. Hope this helps. Also, check out the Ping link joepro23 gave you.

    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
