I have finally planned a golf trip in April. I am going with several others, most of which are good golfers (14 and under handicaps), so here's my question. . . . . . .

As I just got serious about golf last year, and I'm steadily improving, still with my high handicap, I'm a lil initmidated about the trip. Any of you guys have any advise to make me feel better? Thanks in advance.

I think there are about 15-18 guys going. I know 4-5 of them pretty well, have met most of the rest but not all.

First, if there's 15-18 people, I highly doubt that you will be the worse. Second, it's a golf trip. You know what people care about on a golf trip... having a good time! Unless you're with a bunch of doucheb... errr... serious golfers, it's about the comraderie, the trash talking, the drinking (for some), etc. It's not about how you play, it's about how much fun you are to be around. A lot of self-deprecating humor (especially on the course) can go a long way.

One thing i would try and do is play with as many random ppl you can before you go so you get used to playing with ppl you dont know. that was my biggest problem til recently. I always thought ppl were gonna judge me when i hit a bad shot and after just going by myself to the course so i would be paired up with ppl i didnt know for a couple of weeks it has really help my confidence when i now meet new ppl and I dont play as bad cause i dont think they will judge me know.

Also check out the book The Mental Game of Golf by Patrick Kohn PhD. It helped me

Thanks for the advise guys! I really don't have the opportunity to play with strangers! I only play with two or three folks but I'm quick to point how bad my game is but I definitely have a GREAT time even on my worst play!!! As said, I got serious about golf last year and am continuing to improve weekly, a couple more birdie putts every week, just basically cutting down on the miscues and 50 yards and in is all I'm concentrating on right now! The lesson every 1-2 weeks is helping greatly as well!!!!

Where you going, Myrtle? In any event, as others have said the main thing about a golf trip is just having FUN! You are still learning so don't set your expectations too high. Just relax and enjoy!

I'm actually going to Gulf Shores. And I have set my expectations pretty high. . . . . . NO work, LITTLE phone, GREAT food, GREAT company, GREAT bourbon, two GREAT shots a round, however, the two great shots a round are very negotiable!! Sound reasonable??????

Sounds like you have the perfect attitude for the trip......play your best and have fun.....don't worry about the other guys - just worry about what you can control, which is you.....a few thoughts:

Don't be the slow player in the group Have fun - don't be the angry guy Remember your etiquette Compliment other players when they hit a good shot Don't apologize for bad shots Don't feel bad for not playing to their level Relax, you are on vacation and have fun.....keep a smile on your face, play the best you can, and don't worry about the other guys.....some of my favorite rounds have been with guys that shoot 120, but they are fun, relaxed, keep a good attitude, and have a few jokes

Sounds like great advise. I will not be the slow guy. And definitely not the angry guy!! I do tend to apologize for mishits, I'll have to work on that. And I'm quick to compliment on good shots. As far as etiquette, I try my best, lil worried about doing something stupid for lack of knowing better.

Sounds great! We're leaving for Myrtle Beach in 2 weeks! Can't wait! Now if Titleist would just get me my new irons I'd be set!!!

You should always be comfortable playing with folks you don't know. Some of my best times / rounds have been had with folks I got paired up with at the course.
Playing with folks you don't know will help you major league in ways you won't realize until later. You might meet your future boss or client on the course; maybe you'll
play with a neighbor that you didn't know golfed. ....anyway I Don't see any reason why you wouldn't have the opportunity to play with strangers-- that is
unless you don't have the opportunity to play before you go. I just got back from Maui and played with strangers the entire time; now I've got contacts there
for when I go back.

Also you should maybe set your expectations a bit higher than "two" great shots a round to "two great shots a hole"-- your mental game is keeping you back!

I got back from a golf vacation in Gulf Shores two weeks ago.

Where are you staying and what courses are you shooting?

    • Day 2: August 12.  I did 25 balls of the ruler drill from LSW for putting.  24 of the 25 stayed on the ruler through 36" but some were smoother than others.  I suspect if the ruler (and goal) had been 48" far fewer would have stayed on.  I'm trying to go by sound, and not look, since when I attempt short putts, I don't want to look (although now I wonder if that's conventional wisdom that turns out to be wrong).
    • Day 17: did mirror work while watching TV. Working on wrist feels.
    • Day 315 - 2025-08-12 Got a little work in before Juniors showed up for one of their Summer Sessions.
    • I always knew it as high but never that distance was 90-95% of rating! That has always played to my advantage. I never have but I could totally vanity cap myself by playing **super** long courses that are otherwise super easy. There was one course like that in LA that I used to play that helped my cap like that. The back tees were close to 7k yards, but otherwise the course was incredibly easy. Wide open, misses almost always had a play at the green from the adjacent hole, flat greens, not challenging green complexes, etc. But it got a high rating because it was so long. So I could swing hard, spray and pray, and score well (relative to my handicap).
    • Do need a special ferrul. Thanx 😉
