I just wanted to tell you guys about what happened to me today.

Background: Haven't golfed in over a decade. Been practicing for 1 week now (range, park, etc). Had problems with shanking and slicing.

Went back and analyzed my setup and swing after reading a bunch of stuff here and all over the internet.

I found I had my left hand turned too far left , which is a weak grip, right?

I also noticed that I never really did a proper wrist cock in the backswing which resulted in very little 'snap' at the moment of impact.

Today I went to the park with my wedge, which has been giving me horrible shank problems lately. I focused on proper weight balance on my feet, a proper grip with both V's point towards my right shoulder, starting my back swing by turning my chest, and also a wrist cock and snap through impact.

- I didn't swing as hard.
- My head speed seemed much faster at impact because of the wrist snap.
- My wedge went maybe 10 yards farther.
- The ball actually flew in the direction I was aiming.
- My swing came slightly from the inside.
- My divot looked normal.
- I gained a lot of confidence back.

I've been trying to swing way too hard to compensate for not properly cocking my wrists and snapping them over at impact. This caused my arms to reach out farther from centrifugal force and shank the ball.

I see the pros taking a sort of half practice swing where they cock their wrists 90 degrees on the back swing and the follow through with their wrist back to 90 degrees. I did this a few times before hitting the ball and it helped me 'feel' what my wrists should be doing.

Today I read that this wrist snap, or unhinge, or whatever you call it, can increase club head speed at impact by as much a 7 times.

Can't wait to see how much this improves my weak driving distance

Its cool that a few things you read here have helped you, that's what were here for. A couple things you should think about though: All the tips in the world added together make a horrible golf swing your best bet is to take a few lessons with a pro to help shake the rust off and make sure your swing isn't horrific. Second your equipment might not be right for you anymore, might be a good idea to invest in some new equipment (fitted of course)

thats quality... keep it goin.... keep practising.
Im not the best of players (by the most streched imagination in the world) but I love the game and when something goes right its an epic feeling!!

I did get new equipment after going to the driving range and hitting my brother-in-law's new clubs. Finally retired my 1982 clubs.

Thanks!

Today I read that this wrist snap, or unhinge, or whatever you call it, can increase club head speed at impact by as much a 7 times.

In that case, I should hit my 7 iron 1000 yards.

I won't say 7 times, but lag is an important part of optimal distance, yes. Nice to read your thread, hope it stays consistent.
