I just played in my club championship over the weekend, it was played over two days at two courses (we have four) I was entered into the NET championship.
The second hole on day one is a par 5, I hit a perfect drive, took a 6i to lay up, there is water left and right with a landing area only 35 yds wide, I hit the 6i perferctly with a little cut on in to hold it against the wind, the ball comes down and hits a sprinkler head, with the left to right spin on the ball it takes a huge bounce into the water. I am affraid to say that my head was gone for about ten minutes I stuck another ball into the water left and ended up with a NINE.
I still managed to get the rest of the round back on track and shoot a net 68.

Day two, I am playing well and only 5 over par for 15 holes, hole 16 is a par 5 dogleg right around a lake, my drive found the water so I am hitting three from the edge of the lake trying to cut the corner, I hit a perfect 3w and the ball hit a branch of a tree on the other side of the lake about 180 yds away no thicker that my arm, the ball bounced back into the water, I took another from the same spot and hit the ball perfect again and hit the SAME BRANCH and the ball flicks up into the air and we never saw where it went, I then take another ball and plays it perfectly into the fairway only to put my eighth stroke into the greenside bunker, I get up and down for a TEN, I go on to par the 17th and bogey 18th for a NET 67.

If I could have those two holes over again and made maybe par, bogey I would have won the championship, oh well there's always next year, but if I keep playing like I am at the moment I think my hamdicap will be a lot less than this year!!

Sorry to rant on but I had to get it off my chest lol, the golf gods were just not on my side lol.

Look on the bright side. If you hadn't had those two bad holes, the handicap committe would really be on your case! Net 68 and 67? BTW, what did the winner shoot? Anyway, good shooting nonetheless.

I feel your pain, although I haven't had this happened. I've wondered for quite some time how I'd react to something like that. I told myself - and it hasn't happened, so I don't know if this would work - that if it happened, I'd say to myself that if I'm good enough to hit a sprinkler head from a fairway lie, then I'm good enough to someday hole out with the same club on an approach shot. You know, inflate the ego a bit on bad luck. No idea if this would work.

Thanks for the comments, my total was 135 the winner came in with a total of 129, the guy that won was the same handicap as myself and I played against him two weeks ago in a match play event and he just beat me on the last hole.

Youre playing club championships already? This club doesnt waste any time..hahaha. But ive had holes like that in tournaments. They're tough and deflating. What it taught me is to never compound my mistakes or bad breaks, both physical and mental. It seems like you might have done that.

Ouch man. I had similar holes this past Sunday. Not a Club Championship, but still.

I carded a ten on a par four... Driver in the fairway, 5 iron where the grip slipped in my hand on the downswing and opened the face JUST enough to get me in a bad lie in a green side trap... three swings to get OUT of that... then a chip on to the green... and four putts from about six feet because my head was spinning from what had happened.

Later, I carded a nine on a par five. Driver hit a fairway bunker that I though I had carried, 6 iron to the middle of the fairway, chunked a 3 hybrid into another fairway bunker, fat pitching wedge out, skulled a sand wedge, clipped a tree branch on my pitch, hit a thin wedge over the green, chipped up and then a one putt for the nine.

Those two holes cost me about six to eight strokes and I ended up with a net 73... winner was a net 67.

Your story is definitely more difficult to handle because you seemingly hit good shots and got penalized by bad breaks, but... I know the pain of wondering 'what if'.

I agree...you shoot Net 67 & 68, without the 'quad' and the 'cinco' you would have shot Net 63 both days! My guess is the guy who won is sandbagging, too... he shot a 129 (which if my math is correct) NET, which I think would be around an 80 and 81 GROSS (for 2 days). Wow...a sixteen handicapper shoots in the single digits BOTH DAYS!

I hit a perfect 3w and the ball hit a branch of a tree on the other side of the lake about 180 yds away no thicker that my arm, the ball bounced back into the water, I took another from the same spot and hit the ball perfect again and hit the SAME BRANCH and the ball flicks up into the air and we never saw where it went,

Not trying to be rude, but these hardly sound like "perfect shots". Even if you struck them solidly, you were aiming at the wrong spot. Course management is the key! A ball that hits a tree is not unlucky.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Yeh I know, but they were perfect contact, perfect shape tot eh shot etc, I just should have aimed a little more left.

    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
