So I was hitting a few different clubs the other day at Golf Smith and started narrowing it down. Th?e rep there did a brief fitting for me as I was getting close to making a decision. When he put the tape on the bottom of the club to check where I was hitting, it showed that I was consistently hitting the ground more with the heel. I have two questions just in case I decide to finish out the season with my current clubs:

1.) If I am hitting more with the heel, could I adjust this in my setup by being closer to the ball which would flatten the bottom of the club out at impact?

2.) I am currently hitting the Nike Ignite irons, does anyone know if they can be bent to fix my issue or do those clubs look like they can only be bent when they are being made?

Thanks in advance!!!

If you need a flat club, get your clubs bent flat, don't try to fight nature.

Your Ignites may be able to be bent, but they may be fairly brittle. If you do decide to buy new clubs, they will usually bend them for free at that time. This way, if they break one, they can just replace it. I would highly recommend you play clubs at the right lie angle.

One disadvantage to cast is they can break very easily when bent, heck forgings can go 8 up or down like butter. Don't adjust your set-up to fit your club. Have your club bent to fit you but if the bender isn't very careful you may be out of a club.

+1 for flat/bent heads. I'm playing with my first set of fit clubs (1 degree bent) and my confidence making good contact has gone way up.

In my bag:

One for slicing
One for hooking
One for knocking it in the cup

Don't adjust your swing for having clubs that don't fit. I'd get those Ignites bent to fit you. How many degrees off are you? If it's a degree or two, bending should be no problem, and you'll be hitting the ball in the center of the clubface.

Club fitting is a tricky thing, in the Titleist AP2 and AP1 the board showed I needed 2 degrees flat, with Ping I didn't need an adjustment at all, lol

demo, get fitted, enjoy

"Anyone know if Ping demo day events have free fittings?" Yes, it's always free

Also to note some clubs are already a little more upright than others. The nike rep out at my home course told me that the VR Forged Split Cavity irons are about 1* upright. I need to get my lie check on my AP2s cus I think my 2* upright is a little to much for me now.

That's because there's no "standard" lie. Ping clubs are flat. With Ping, I'm 3.5° upright, with Nike, just 2°. This is why you need to dynamic fit each different type of club.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
