About two years ago I bought my SC putter. A nice Studio Style model that I bought from a pro shop, and since got some custom work done on it.

Now, a few months after I got mine, my golfing partner thought it would be a good idea to GET THE SAME MODEL of SC that I got. He bought it online from who he said was a reputable online store. I don't know anymore than that.

Goofball. Anyway, I still have the HC that came w/ the putter. It's the standard black one w/ the Scotty dots on it, w/ Titleist stitched on one side of it. My golf partner also has the same HC. However, his HC isn't padded as well as mine and overall just has kind of a different shape to it. It flat out just isn't identical to mine, even though it's supposed to be the same HC.

Also, after he used it for a season, his shaft started developing rust spots on it. Now, I've NEVER had that happen w/ my SC or ANY of my clubs. I looked at his putter and there were rust spots all over the shaft! What could cause that and/or is that a defective finish on the shaft? Bad steel? Wrong steel?

I hated to tell him that I suspected he might have a fake, because he's the kind who would deny it and then get upset, so I've never said anything to him. However, what do you folks think?

I don't know enough about it as I should, so I yield to you good people.

Oh, and depending on what you guys say, I think the next time I see him, I'm going to demand to see the SN and make him register it w/ SC. He has yet to do that. Sh*t, I don't even know if it's got a SN on it.

So, based on what I've said about the HC compared to mine, and the rusty shaft on it, what do you guys think? The rest of the putter looks pretty legit. I see no differences between his and mine regarding looks, so who knows? I can't really compare the "feel" of it to mine because I putt left handed, and he putts right handed. So I guess I never got a feel for the putter.

Leave it alone, the last thing you want is a pissed off playing partner. I wld say its fake just from the headcover differences and definetly the rust spots. Why do you care if its fake? Everytime you drain a 15 footer for bird and he 3 putts you'll know why and can laugh on the inside. Not worth calling him out on it

Yeah. That's been my problem for over a year. Do I tell him about it and piss him off or not? Now, I'm normally not the kind of guy who gives two sh*ts about pissing people off or not, but this is my golfing partner and he happens to be a good friend.

And about putting. He is a terrible putter.

haha. But you think it's probably fake? Correct?

And the thing that really got me was the part about the rusty shaft. What's up w/ that? He stores his putter w/ all his other clubs when he's not using them and his putter is the only club to get rust on it. His other clubs are nice Ping's and TM clubs.

Yeah. I'm familiar w/ the type of sites that you're talking about. I've seen them.

That's another thing I never really dug into my partner about. Was where and how he bought it. He literally just showed up one day to go golfing w/ me and surpirsed me w/ his new putter that was the same damn thing as mine. "Hey, good idea partner. You have the same putter as me." haha. Oh well. But, I have a suspicion it's a fake. Hence my questioning..............................

Ok. Upon furthur investigating I think I would be able to know if his putter is fake or not, just from checking a few things in a discreet way.

If he is a terrible putter, he would still be a terrible putter with a real Scotty. So I would just leave it alone.

I'd personally wait to mention it. Perhaps on a carry-over hole where the loser is buying burgers and drinks.

"you know... you'd make more putts with a real scotty cameron..." should suffice fine.

I've said it before....It's as fake as a 20$ Rolex. Don't tell your Bud....just tell him you have to clean rust off 300$ putters once in a while. He'll fall for it. LOL On the serious side...let him think what he want's if it serves no good to tell him!

P.S. Tell him to get some navy jelly to clean off the rust. The stuff eats rust. Then put a coat of wax on to help protect it.

I appreciate the tip on the rust. He asked me for advice on what to do about it and I really didn't have anything good to tell him. I guess I've never had to deal w/ it before. haha.

He and I were just in a golf galaxy just last weekend too. He was looking for a new grip for his "Scotty". I could only roll my eyes and keep quiet. haha. Poor guy.

You can find Naval jelly at an Auto store. There are other products that work well also that they will have. Just ask and I'm sure they'll have it. Also sense it is fake...He could spray a thin coat of clear urethane on the head leaving the face alone. Could work for the shaft also, but he would have to be handy with such things. I'd fix it myself if I lived near him.

I guess it could go both ways, I would hate to piss the guy off, but then again, I would want him to know so perhaps he can contact the so called "reputable" online seller and get things right.

He bought it online from who he said was a reputable online store. I don't know anymore than that.

Yeah. I think I'm going to press the issue. Perhaps at the 19th hole after some drinks.

Anyway, keep in mind I haven't "confirmed" that what he has is a fake, I just have my suspicions. And from reading some more on the topic online, and in getting a little advice here, I'm now fairly confident that when I check it out, I'll be able to tell if it's legit or not.

    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
