Hi guys.

After even more debating, I'm still unsure as to what irons I should buy. I'm just starting to get back into golf again and I'm currently playing off about 26.

I'm wanting to spend around £200-300 and have starting to narrow my choice down to :

TaylorMade r7
Nike Slingshot series (unsure which would be best...HL, 4D...?!)
Nike Sumo
Cobra SZ
Wilson Di7
Cleveland CG Gold (although this is purely based on price - I know nothing about them!)

I know, I know...I need to get down to a shop that is willing to put up with me taking the time to try them all out, but I was just wondering about peoples' opinions on the above (and if possible, suggestions for any sets that I have over looked...).

Thanks!

Adams A7's should be considered IMO.

I have the Slingshots ( ones in Avatar pic ) and I love them. I have not tried any of the other ones you mentioned so I can't say what was best for me. But my game has improved so much with my Slingshots. The 2010 Slingshots are supposed to be even better.

I hear good things about the Callaway irons as well, so don't overlook them. Other than that I think you have a good list.

I've been seeing Callaway X-18 irons on sale for roughly $400 or so. Very forgiving irons.

I'm not real sure any brand is important. The things that are important are the correct shaft and length and grip size.
If you can't find the OEM's that fit those qualifications, then find someone to build you the correct set. Just buying the
"right" brand doesn't make a lot of sense.

I like my X20s, although the heads are a bit large and a little klunky out of the rough. But, you can do basic fade and draw with them from the fairway if you need to work a shot.

X20s have a high-launch head and a come standard with a mid-kick (middle trajectory) Uniflex shaft.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I was playing on some Titliest DCI 990's. I'm fairly new so I'm downgrading to some GX922's. They arrive tomorrow, standard length, +1 lie.

Those are all good choices, as are the Adams A7 that were mentioned. I don't think you listed a bad choice in those, and none stand out as far superior to the others.

The important things are to make sure you're fitted properly -- this shouldn't cost more than buying them off the shelf. Grip size, shaft length, and flex are vital.

The other important thing is whether you like the way they feel on a good hit, the way they feel on a bad hit (how much feedback do you want?), and how they look when you stand over a shot.

I've tried all of those clubs and personally I'd take the taylormade. I just like the feel of them. I have also heard great things of callaway irons but something about their equipment doesn't quite fit my eye, never knew why. Maybe take a look at some older MX models from the mizuno line, heard very nice things about those too.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
