Topping means your trying to help the ball into the air then letting the club down the work. I would say try to stay down and through the ball. Don't worry were the ball goes just stay down for a bit longer.

Not surprising that it is a fairway wood. The driver is teed up and the focus for irons is hitting down on them and making a divot. With the 3-wood, many people are more likely to try and "sweep" the ball without touching the ground at all. This, along with the ball being far away from your body, is what causes many tops. Also, I have also seen tops from really good players if they try to use a 3-wood from the rough (me being one of them). Since the ball is sitting down in the grass they are even more likely to catch the top half of it. What I would recommend is to focus on hitting the 3-wood on a descending blow (like the irons) and don't worry about catching a little turf after you make contact with the ball.

It's certainly not the only potential cause, but be certain the ball position is not too far forward. For me, it's ball position, or trying to kill it.

Great tips guys. I do the same thing and it looks as though I have the ball positioned to far forward. I usually have it at the same location as my driver, inline with my left heel. Is that too far forward? Thanks

My contact on fairway woods improved dramatically after placing more weight on my lead foot. This would help force me to strike down on the ball.

Ball position like a long iron, hit down on the ball, tee it low.

you ever try a bunker style splash cut for the burried lie? Starting to like that one myself using the huge sole lol.

good chance that you're trying to flatten out your swing because of the longer shaft. stand up taller, will help get your swing plane more vertical and hit down on it like everyone is telling you.

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
