I have developed a problem with my swing. Off a tee I tend to hit decent shots, but off of the turf, I hit the ball either fat or low.

Yesterday at the range, everything longer than an 8 iron was either fat or no more than 10 feet off the ground.

My new clubs are shorter (37.75" 5 iron, previous clubs were 38.25) and also I went with a light weight shaft (uncut weight of 90 instead of 112) Also, the previous club were stiff flex, these are regular flex.

I suspect that the lighter shaft and shorter weight has lowered the swing weight quite a bit, but would that cause me to hit a shot fat?

The funny thing is that off a tee (driver) I sometimes hit fat, but when I hit it, I crush it. Low penantrating ball flight that hit the screen the back screen at the range (approx. 225 with reduced flight balls)

I don't have any video, but I am completely lost. I switched my iron set back to the old set that was in the closet and hope to hit the range hoping that it was the cause, but I honestly don't know.

I am scheduled to take a lesson next tuesday to have a professional look at it, but I am heading to florida this weekend to play some golf and really don't want to play if I have to keep hitting the ground 4 inches behind the ball.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Distance Master irons...I have never heard of them. Are they a good quality club? Did you ever hit them before buying them?

Your swing bottom is too far back. Could be a number of reasons, but chances are good you don't move your weight forward enough. A video would help.

distance master is club builders head that is sold through golf galaxy. It is a component club. very similar to Pine Meadow. Check out Golfworks.com for more information.

I had not hit them prior to building them. I switched back to my previous set of irons to see if that helps. I will update the thread and let everybody know. I wonder if I could take a video with my iphone and post it. Quality wouldn't be spectacular but it might help.

When this happens to me, it means that I'm not releasing my wrists properly. Hit a couple of easy 30 yard PW/SWs just to reingrain the feel of flipping your wrists through and relearn your weight shift/contact point. Don't worry about technique/address, etc.. Just keep in rhythm and let muscle memory take over. Just like you'd do with a sand wedge if you had a wait on a tee or something.

thats the worst part. I always warm up with 10 or so half swing or less chip shots. Yesterday I was having soo much trouble I pulled my gap wedge and hit 3 perfect shots in a row, but as soon as I went to the longer clubs I struggled. at one point it was soo bad, I literally sat down at the range and was about to give up. I am determined to hit the range today with my old set of irons to see if the problem goes away with my old irons, if it does, than I am convinced the problem is something of a bad combo with my new sticks and will put them in teh closet and play with last years set.

This guy's videos are pretty basic (in a good way) and should get you started down the right path. Plus, his name is something like Rickardt Stronghardt which sounds like eihter a Swedish superhero or a French porn star...great name.

Distance Master are made by Maltby, they are very good clubs.

Those... videos... are... AWESOME. They may or may not help your game, but they are guaranteed to entertain you. Its somewhat difficult to determine if its more comedy than instruction. Either way, its great info in the best possible format for enjoyment.

Rickard Strongert, not quite as silly sounding, but it is a funny name to say the least. He's Swedish, and quite a well respected golf pro.

I stopped at the range today after finishing my honey do list and brought my old clubs out with me. i am happy to report that the problem appears to lie in the distance master clubs. My previous clubs (Grand Hawk XP-24, component head that looks like Big Berthas) with Dynalite shafts in stiff. The heavier shaft and longer length seems to help quite a bit.

I am not discounting Distance Master, they are a great club head. I do however blame the club builder (fitter) which is myself. I built these clubs to standard length based on a chart and I suspect they are too short for me. I have played .5 or .75 clubs for several years and going to the shorter clubs combined with the light weight shafts was a detrement to my game. I have placed the other irons in my bag and will probably sell the distance masters (which were very cheap to build because I got an AMAZING deal on the heads)

Live and learn.

I wanted to thank everybody, the videos that i watched on this thread along with a video that helped me work on balence and tempo (feet together drill)

The last two rounds that I played I was hitting my irons pretty well and my driving was amazing, which is something that I can honestly say that I have never said in the past.

I fought hitting fat for 3 years. Tried everything. Then one day I decided to take away the ground behind the ball. In other words visualize the ground falling away from the back of the ball at about 45* and hit the ball on the plane in front of the ball. I'll leave it to a good golfer to explain but it really worked for me. Haven't hit fat but a few times in 2 months.
