I was watching the golf channel and they made a interesting comment on Rory's swing after he won at quall hallow. They said that he is an unusual combination of power and accuracy because his hands stay near his body through impact. They showed people like Jim Furyk and other golfers who hit the ball straight and they all had there hands close to there body through impact. But Rory his able to add power to his.

I've noticed this too among accurate golfers.

Conversely, the people who seem to struggle with accuracy have their arms stretched way out and away from their body.

Yea I saw that too, I've read tons and of instruction and playing tips and never once have I seen this, well put like that. Gonna try that next trip to the range, after all we could all use more accuracy right?

Watched the exact same segment last night. Definitely interesting. Rory has one hell of a swing. Super crisp. I didn't realize when i was watching Quail Hollow that he hit that driver 350 yards on the par 5 right down the fairway. Then hit the 5 iron 200+ yards and put the ball 3 ft from the pin. What a swing.

This swing immediately popped into my head (Brian Gay is consistently one of the most accurate guys on Tour, at least off the tee, and I bet he'd be near tops in GIR as well if he had more length):

I don't think how close your hands are to your body has much at all to do with accuracy. I think the better way to think about it is you should focus on matching your ball position to your natural swing plane (or vice versa, it gets a little weird to think about, haha. The point is, ball position, hand position, and swing plane all need to be matched up and be as natural as possible. From a down the line view, the swing plane should match with the angle the club hangs at address). If you have an upright swing (like Rory), the ball will be close to your feet and your hands will be close to your body, and if you have a flatter swing plane, it will be the opposite. The distance from hands to body varies widely on tour, and I don't think it's any sort of secret key to accuracy. Just my opinion...

Accuracy is all about keeping the clubface as square as possibe through the impact zone while entering the impact zone on a fairly straight club path. Rory had a great weekend where his lower body and upper body were synced together and he was stripping it. Faldo even said he was hitting the ball all over the map at Augusta because he was out of sync. It's not like he is Jim Furyk and hits it straight conistently. His timing was simply on for 2 rounds!

I know this is an ad, but damn this video has a great slow-mo down the line look at Rory's swing. So nice!

God that is sick rotation, i hear he had a back problem a few weeks ago, i hope this wont hurt his career. I think i read he has 110 degrees of rotation.

I agree that accuracy is all about how long your face is square at impact. Take Moe Norman for example, possibly the most consistent ball striker of all time
