Hi

I can see in your sig you currently have the 2ball. Do you like bigger/heavier putters? If so the newport 2 may be too light for you. I'm partial to heavier putters, so I currently have the Scotty Cameron Squareback 2, and the Scotty Laguna 2.5. both relatively heavy putters with the laguna being smaller profile.

Only thing you can do it hit em all and see what feels the best... but I'm partial to scotty.

Well....those are four fairly different putters. All good ones. You just need to find which one feels best to you. Looks like three of the four are insert putters and one (the scotty) is a milled face. Milled vs insert provides two very different feels.

I would spend some time with each and focus on three things: 1. which one FEELS the best to you - weighting, stroke, ball of the face, etc. 2. which one gives you better distance judgement (try some longer lag putts) and 3. which one are your most consistant with in sinking 3-5 foot putts.

What I Play:

4 Wood: G15

Putter: Newport Studio Select 2.7

I just purchased the White Ice Sabertooth and like it quite a bit. It's slightly more firm than older insert models, but not as firm as stainless steel. I was a blade putter guy, but after trying this thing out for about 45 minutes, I was convinced that this was the putter for me. I have a straight back, straight forward stroke and this club just seemed to stay straight for me more than all the other models I tried.

I tried out a bunch of TM Rossa models, almost every Odyssey putter lol (White Hot XG, White Ice, and Crimson models), some Cleveland models, some Pings and even a SeeMore. The store I was at didn't have Scottys, the Nike Method, or or Odessey Black Series.

EDIT: I was never an "insert guy" either, but the Sabertooth just felt right to me.

Do this, but make sure you do it with YOUR golf balls. The ones you play everytime out.

Ive narrowed the options down now for one reson or the other! Cant find a scotty or sabretooth at a decent price which narrows my options down to either ping i series anser or odyssey rossie blade which im thinking might be best option due to softer face!!

The Newport 2, Squareback 2, and Laguna 2.5 (assuming all are Studio Select) all have the same headweight/swingweight for each length. The corresponding weights are 340g/35", 350g/34", and 360g/33". Each might feel different because of the size/layout of the putter head's shape, but the actual headweights are all the same. As for the original topic, the only correct choice is the one you make on your own. Don't just choose the one you make the most putts with on the practice green; choose the one you feel most comfortable with and you know in your gut is the best fit.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
