so i've been home for about a month with mono and iv read almost every golf digest for the past 1 years and the more i read the more i notice how small the gap between the PGA tour pro's is to the average 5 hcp to the average 10 hcp to the avg bogey golfer. you look at the pro to the 5 and the difference is 10% then you look at the 5 to the 10 and the difference is maybe 5%. these numbers are small but i was wondering how accurate they are. what are your numbers for certain things because i know most of us have our own software the does all this for us.

I don't keep stats, i just remember the shots that cost me strokes..

OB, water, 3 putts, ect.. If i hit a green and three putt i wasted 1 shot. If i hit it out of bounds i wasted 1 shot, if i hit it in the water i wasted 1 shot. So i take those off my score to tell him how i did. Really the worst i ever want to play is 18 over par period. I believe i can keep it in bounds, away from water, and get on the green in at least three shots on each hole and two putt. Then if i get up and down a few times, hit a few greens and make a few putts, i can usually shoot my normal pattern. For example i hit 7 out of 9 greens on night and shot 5 over par, i three putted 4 times, so i know there if i usually two putt i got 1 over par. I feel like the potential for 1 over par is there, but i just didn't execute to that level. Honestly i should hold myself to being able to get under par, i should at least hit a few birdie putts. Thats how i keep track of my game, i could care less if i hit 50% fairways, 60% greens.

no.... just no.

if i hit a 5 i off every tee and hit the fairway with every shot does that make me better than a PGA pro?
pro's play on courses with deep thick rough and super-fast greens.

play a course a day or two after a pga tournament, you'll shoot at least 10 shots over your handicap.

+1 haha wow thats exactly what i wanted to say.

saevel-golf is completely stats and what you shoot, not what you should shoot. if i was like oh i missed a 5 foot putt on that hole and i chipped it a little longer than i wanted on another hole i could be a +5 in no time but thats not how it works. they only way to improve is to break up your game into parts and the numbers dont lie. i average 1.93 ppgir, thats a weak point. i also know i average like 3.4 on par 3's thats another weak point but i wouldnt know it and be able to work on it without the numbers telling me

What is the average for par 3's on tour? I would guess it would be only slightly better than your average. The pros really make it up on the par 5's the most. And par 4's as well.

on par 3's pros range from 2.85 to 3.3 and on par 5's they range from 4.53 to 4.93 with the leader at -81 on par 5's.

along with that the leading pro hits 72.61% of par 5's in 2 but the guy in last who only hits 16% of par 5's in 2 is -16 when he attempts so there is definitely something to be said for that. crey-thats a great quote

its still the same game. like im not saying the courses they play arent harder but if youve played any form of competition other than inner clubs the course get all dressed up and slightly harder for them. plus im not trying to like directly compare us im jsut trying to see if the numbers are true and how little improvement goes such a long way

but it isn't little improvment.

they play on 200+ yard par 3's 600 yard monster par 5's 500 yard par 4's they are more accurate from over 200 yards out than you are from 80 hitting a wedge shot. they don't play the same game as us really, you can pretend all you like that you'r only X amount of shots from becoming a pro. But they are on a totally different level than the average +3,+4 handicapper.

im not saying its completely the same but the numbers will work. like the difference from a 500 yard par 4 and a 415 yard one is your going to hit a bigger drive and a slightly longer club into the green. im not saying it s the exact same but its a similar game

JB, I think that what Cody is doing is an interesting, low fidelity, statistical sample of average players, and take the thread as just that! I know that I am no where near pro statistics, If I were I would not be here in my office (wishing I was playing), but out there traveling to Ft. Worth Tx to compete! But it is interesting to see how average golfers compare to each other grouped by HC. Instead ot trying to disproof the fact that the numbers make no sense compared to Pro's put your stats in for comparison's sake. Sorry....I think this is an interesting thread, being battered by those " purist". I had to rant ...

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
