I am self-taught. I did go to a couple week-long golf camps in 7 & 8th grade and did take 3 lessons from the pro at my grandfather's member course but that was years ago. If anything, besides being self-taught with books, videos, etc. my grandfather and a few friends have helped me out along the way. I simply lack the consistency for 18 holes and being self-taught I sometimes feel like I over think and analyze too much.

I'd like to take lessons and look forward to doing so but my son needs to get into day care first for that to happen. Crazy life schedule right now.

I am. But it's not really because I want it, it is because I haven't find yet a Pro that I feel that I will work fine with him. Around here it's hard to find a good Instructor, that's why I always try to get some info from here.

Greetings!

I'm not sure if self taught is the correct way to put it, but no, i haven't had an official lesson from a pro.

Been playing for almost 25 years. Decided this year to really get serious, and basically ruined any natural ability I had by reading too many tips in magazines and forums (no offense, there are some great tips here, I just get too many running through my head at the same time) Finally got a lesson from our club pro, and it was like a light switch got turned on. I'm definitely in the "why did I wait so long" camp.

I'm self taught up to this point. I got my first set on golf clubs when I was 15. I was BIG into baseball growing up and I could never convert my baseball swing into a golf swing. So I stopped playing golf due to frustration . Im now 28 and approx 1.5 yrs ago I decided I was going to force myself to learn the game. I started with the same old set of clubs I got as a gift when I was 15. Slowly but surely I started seeing improvements. Started out in the 115-110 range. I finally broke 100 approx 2 months into playing and decided it was time to treat myself to a new set. I bought myself a new set of Adams AS03's which seemed to fit my level of play from what I read. I consistently shoot in the mid to low 90s now. I've had 4 rounds under 90 with my best being 87. Im happy with my progression for the number of times I get to play a month (avg 1 round a week). I've considered lessons and they would probably do me wonders but I guess I'm a bit stubborn.

That's not self-taught. It's okay though, because most people really aren't self taught - somebody showed them what to do, they read instructional material, and watched the pros on TV. What part of that mixture is "self-taught".

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
