Hopefully this is the year where I finally get around to putting my ideas into practice and forge out a good swing.

This is the only full swing video I have so far but I will stick one up of my chipping technique once it uploads.

Problems I know: My right hand is waaaaaay too strong, I'm gripping that thing like a baseball bat. I've been making a conscious effort to weaken my grip and when it happens, I am more consistent especially with my irons.

It wasn't a full swing - this was intentional as I was having a bad day and wanted to try and keep the slice under control but I still blocked this one right.

I think I stand up a little early in the down swing.

I hope to keep this thread updated quite often as hopefully my swing improves.

Can anyone explain why it has changed the aspect ratio to 4:3 despite the window being in 16:9?

Just chucking that is as my chipping is an aspect I think I'm really getting good at. Consistently getting distances I trust since I stopped taking the more exotic looking aerial route with every close in approach shot.

can you please post a proper golf swing.
It's hard to tell if your not doing a real swing (don't follow the ball either)

you move your left leg too much, your getting a lot of hip rotation.

To "coil" your body you want to get around 20-30 degrees hip rotation 90 degrees shoulder rotation.
your nearly getting 90-90.....

see what I mean?

keep that left foot planted, go to the range and try sort things out.

I see what you mean, I'll have to work on that. I'm going to try and get to the range at least twice a week and get to the course at least once. Those videos were just taken for entertainment sake as opposed to for recording my swing. In future it'll be a stationary camera.

also can you get a face on view for chipping?

Chipping is a "feel" shot, there's a few basics you need to get right but the rest you can make up yourself. There's a lot of different techniques.

Those guys were all talent though (no offence kellfire)

They played a different game than we do nowadays. Stay with a more conventional swing, it's easier to fix.

I actually do try to keep my legs still, I think I lack flexibility and I end up turning without even realising it.

You need the "X factor in your swing" that's what golf digest calls it.

you'll hit the ball farther honestly and you'll be more consistent.

The X Factor is junk. Don't resist twisting with the lower body. You don't want to overdo it, but 25-45 degrees of hip turn is fine. Resisting gets you trying to maintain flex in the knees and it limits shoulder turn.

This is for Kellfire. Be cautious of taking the advice of a 13 handicap. The X factor is totally bogus. It applies only to people with exceptional flexibility, and very few, if any good instructors teach it even so. The hips need to work in the swing. So long as you don't go so far you lock your legs, you're good. Your problems are much, much more simple and basic at this point in time, don't worry about all that pedantic detail.

The real problems I see in this swing are that you try and lift the ball into the air. Your chip was also a touch "scoopy". You want to hit both down, and through the ball, and transfer your weight to the front side. What you're doing is a classic example of nature taking over, the body hangs back, swings at the ball (not through), and tries to lift it into the air. That's the basic fundamental to work on.

As others have said, you've got to build a bit more torque in your body between your hips and your shoulders. I'd also suggest taking a slightly wider stance while you work on improving your flexibility and your shoulder turn.

Also, it seems like you are in a hurry to get the club to the top. Visualize the plane created between your shoulders and the ball, and extend along this plane on the way back, creating space between your body and your hands (note - this does not mean moving your hands up and out of the plane).

OMFG -2:43 to hit 3 balls. That's not just the ideal swing - you gotta incorporate the pre-shot routine as well.

lol, whats wrong with that guy

it's like he was zoning out - where the H am I - oh yea, golfing. I think he slips in and out of conciousness on the backswing too.

you're right. nobody these days lifts their lead leg in the backswing. OP... if it makes it easier for you to get a good shoulder turn, go ahead and lift your leg a little. i actually do it for tempo when i'm going to rip a drive, it definitely helps me stay in rhythm so i don't get out of balance.

OK I've got a few videos now to upload and I want to get some software to analyse but I'm having trouble. I've been recording in 60fps HD mode on my Kodak ZX1, saving as .mov, and neither V1 Home or JC Basic software will load the videos. I would like to avoid having to convert every video I take before I analyse it... does anyone have any idea what I can do to make these work?

    • Was this the course with 9 blind shots in the first 9 holes?
    • Woof. Not good. 8:40 to 8:50, blah. I know the grip is turned a bit to the left in that part of the video (face is closed a bit), but… no. Not that.
    • Eh. You're tricking yourself. You can still miss right or left, and what you've created is a situation where you HAVE to miss (but the right amount) to make the putt. That's not for me.
    • I can see a point in this.  If you play a straigth 3 footer with a square face aiming at the hole, you can miss both ways, with a close face or an open one. If you aim rigth an close the face at impact (like tiger used to do), physically you can still miss left or rigth but mentally you are only missing left (closed face) and having only 1 miss can give you a boost in confidence. I putt this way on fade putts and aim left and open the face on draw putts, never liked the uncerteinty of putting square to the target.  I apply something like this on approach shots, only use low or high shots and for middle shots I use a low shot with more loft ot a high shot with less loft. This shots are always what they meat low or high, a middle one can go a little towards the high and the low depending on the AoA of each shot making it mentally a little more uncertain what is going to be.
