If I wanted a 55* wedge would there be any advantage to either:
bending a 54* up
- or -
bending a 56* down?
FWIW I use a standard lie and medium bounce (~7*).

What clubs are in your bag (wedges) and what are your yardages. That should be the determining factor.

Say you have a Pitching wedge with a loft of 45 and a 60 lob wedge. You might want to bend it to a 54 if you don't play on buying a gap wedge, or a 56 if you plan on buying a gap wedge.

i'm about to do the same thing, i know changing the loft changes the bounce but what i'd like to know is how the centre of gravity and offset is affected. a 56 is going to have slightly less offset than a 54. things being equal (the bounce being the same) is it better to reduce the loft of a 56 or increase a 54?

From my knowledge, if you bent a 54* to 55*, it would cause the leading edge to be farther out, and vice versa when bending a 56 to 55. I would probably go with the 56 to 55, mainly because it would decrease the amount of bounce and cause the leading edge to be less protruding. But then again, that's me, do what you feel is right.

For all the worry about bending a 54* up or a 56* down, I don't seriously think 1 degree is going to make enough difference to bend either.

+1.

The tour pro's will find a difference. The average player won't. not worth fiddling around with your club.

I think even a mid-level player would notice the playability of a 54/6 versus a 56/8 (both coming from a 55/7 bent either way). The 54 would play much cleaner from a tight lie, and they'd likely notice better sand and rough performance from the 56. In addition, there *should* be a yardage difference of at least 5 yards, which could matter to some depending upon the gaps in their bag

7 degrees of bounce on what wedge? I would advise you use more bounce with the 55 as it will see a lot of use from normal greenside bunkers and more bounce will help.

Perhaps - - but I was also interested in this question for theoretical/understanding issues as well.

7* on my current 52* wedge

But I'm considering buying new irons and with the loft of that "P" club (the possible new one) and my current wedges I need to make sure I've got the right mix of wedges going forward. Just trying to better understand my options.

    • https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/handicapping/world-handicap-system/world-handicap-system-usga-golf-faqs/faqs---calculate-course-handicap-and-playing-handicap.html That's up to you and the league. You can do a percentage, or just do 100%. If they're already salty about a 12.4 becoming a 10… I don't know that docking it to an 8 with 80% will go over all that well. If the higher handicaps are winning way too often, a percentage is often warranted. It affects them more than the low handicappers (22 x .2 = 4.4, 2.2 x .2 = 0.44).
    • Of course, what I also should have asked is "what handicap should be used in a league? The "Course Handicap" or the "Playing Handicap" and if the latter, what allowance should be made for non-elite stroke play competition? (95% of C.H.? 90%? or forget about the playing handicap altogether?
    • I'll keep the rule only if the water is visible above the surface either where the ball is placed or a normal stance would take place. If not, play ball. I took this the same as a divot, just bad luck. Adjust for a saggy/wet lie and hit the ball. (maybe put on your rain clothes before :D)
    • Day 302 - 2025-07-29 Slowly bridging the gap between the academy and the course. And by "slowly" I mean SLOWLY. Played 18 today.
    • I started Foundation on Apple TV.  So far, season 1 is fantastic. Starting season 2. The actors are great with standout from Jared Harris (Hari Seldon) and Lee Pace (Brother Day).  So far it gets a highly recommend.
