[QUOTE=iacas;471114]OP, for the sake of your sanity and your golf game, don't do that.

With all due respect, why?

Now it feels like I'm striking the ball dead centre.

One problem.... I'm getting a slice.
Some of the shots go straight but I really have to turn my body to do this.
Is that normal?

I'll post a video tomorrow

So is the slice going straight then slice, or going right then more right?

With all due respect, why?

Because "releasing the club" is typically really, really bad advice.

With all due respect, why?

It leads to really impure, heavy impacts. It also forces you to manipulate the club around impact, and leads to terrible hooded, smothered shots. It's probably the worst feel at impact I've ever felt when I've tried that.

With all due respect, why?

Because the name of the thread is "Tips to Stop a Flip," not "Tips to Further Engrain My Flip."

I smashed this shot, straight as an arrow.
Normally I slice the ball so maybe this wasn't the right one to choose.

The balls really far back in your stance. Think of it this way, you slice the ball, well if the ball is back in your stance then the club will get to the ball earlier or your forced to hang back. So if it reaches it earlier in the swing, you natural release will cause you to have an open club face. If you move it up in your stance then you give the club time to square up.

But it still looks like your holding on to it in the follow through. Let your arms get extension and allow the weight of the club to drive you to your finish.

Still a flip here.

Because you slice the ball, you're probably worried about not turning the club over through impact. That's a problem. You draw the ball with an open face, you slice it with a closed one. Once you get it through your head that the more you try to hit it right, the less it will go right, the more you'll hit it left. It's the reason so many people struggle so hard with a slice, is because the more you try to correct it, the worse it gets. The only 100% surefire way to prevent the over the top slice, is to swing toward the right.

Still a flip here.

what

is a flip? I thought it meant flipping the wrists over after impact?

what

Flip:

Not a flip: Basically, it's when you let the club cross the hands, or the wrists roll over before the point at which both arms are straight.

If it is, its close to being solid, just a bit of an adjustment. But the rest of his body looks good.. Would the feel be trying to keep the left hand flat at impact?

No, the real question is where the club "releases", or crosses the hands. Most players wrongly try to release at impact. In baseball, for example, the bat should cross the hands right at impact to make a big boom, and hit a home run, right? In hockey, the stick crosses the hands when it hits the puck, lots of speed, goal, all are happy. Sure, it makes sense, but in golf, sense is... well, we all play golf, we know where this is going!

Anyway, the concept is where the actual "release" should be. It should be well past the ball, around waist high. The ball should be struck well, well before the actual release happens. That's why iacas hates the term "release the club" if I read him correctly, because he finds that people try to release it at the ball, not after it (iacas, please elaborate and let me know if this is right).

Thanks a lot for the info guys.
I won't be able to post a swing vid for another 9 days.

The flip is pretty ingrained, it'll take awhile to get rid of it.
It'll be worth it though.

As late as is humanly possible. Try iacas's anti-flip drill, you can search for it here.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
