At 6:14 he shows what the many slicer's hands do at impact, and he's right. But what he doesn't understand is that motion with the hands through impact is, for the most part, an effect, not a cause. Most people flip like that because they come over the top(outside-in swing path). When you come over the top like that, it causes the player to flip/cast in a vain attempt to square the face. His drill isn't much different except for that he's advocating a rolling over of the wrists/forearms through impact as well, which is impossible to time, much like a cast/flip is. It will lead to fat and thin shots, as well as pull hooks, and straight pulls. When you come over the top it automatically sets the face open to the swing path, unless you manipulate the face, like he is advocating. See for yourself, take a backswing and then come over the top and from there go to impact position. The face will be open unless you manipulated it.

Many(I would say most) people slice with a clubface that is relatively square to the target line, but they come over the top. This naturally puts slice spin on the ball. If people would work on not coming over the top, they wouldn't have to really worry about the motion he describes. These things happen naturally in a good swing. No good player consciously rolls the wrists over and "releases" the club like that in the impact zone, it's impossible to time consistently. It's kind of an AJ Bonar approach(which is also crap).

Assuming you have a good grip, don't roll the face open sometime throughout the swing, come from the inside on the downswing and don't flip, you will hit nice, push-draws.

On a side note, I feel sorry for that guy in the background practicing casting the club.

hmmm.... well, he wasn't totally dead wrong about one thing. which is the part about holding on to the angle. this false lag is pretty much, in my experience, the fastest way to hitting inconsistent shots. you want to maintain the angle, but that should be done by swinging the club quickly down and through and letting the arms pass the body and an angle will be created by you swinging the club. but yeah, he's wrong about flipping through impact and deliberately releasing the wrists at the top. it always amuses me when guys tell people to do this, but when you watch their perfect example shot down the middle of the fairway, it's obvious they are not doing what they're telling you to do. it's sad that any yahoo can have his own golf show screwing up people's games. that's why i always say, intentions mean nothing, it's results that count.

You don't want to consciously hold the lag like you said, that makes for inconsistancy just like casting does.

Let the club and physics do the work people. If a concious squaring of the club was actually needed, this game would be impossible to play with any sort of consistancy.

He's telling people to flip the clubhead over at impact too.
Great.

I think a full nine iron would go about 100 yards with that move

It just seems ridiculous. Teach a beginner this way but "advanced players" learn another move. What does that leave for people like me who have only been in the game and trying to improve? He should be talking about keeping the body from moving on the backswing, take away, etc. Casting?

All he's teaching is what the magazines are teaching.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
