The USGA imposed a 460cc limit on club head size effective January 1, 2004.

Titleist should secretly promote them - check the youtube video - in one shot, a guy could pull a Pro V1 into the left trees and push a second one into the water right.

Yes, driver heads are as big as they will ever be.

The 460cc limit doesn't have anything to do with the dimensions of the head (how high, wide, or deep it is). It has to do with how much water it offsets. The "size" of a head is measured by submerging the head in a vat of water and measureing how much the water rises. You can make a head that is extra high, wide, and deep simply by putting a concave top on the head (which I believe several companies have done). My guess is the real reason several driver heads have indentions on them in various places has less to do with performance, and more to do with getting them under the 460cc water offset limit. I think we may have reached a point of diminishing returns on head size anyway. It's harder to get a larger head to square up, so you can only go so big before it is virtually impossible to square. I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing companies producing smaller driver heads (calling them easier to square up heads) that still have as high COR and MOI numbers as the larger heads.

I'll have to go look it up, but I beleive that is what it says in the Wishon book. The reasoning was sound. Wishon did not seem to be a big fan of making driver heads too big.

OK, my memory is starting to come back a little. Think of an ice skater that is spinning in the middle of the rink. When they have their arms stretched out they spin slow, but if they pull their arms close to their body they spin more quickly. The point is that when most of the mass is near the axis of rotation, you spin quickly. When you move mass away from the axis of rotation, you spin more slowly. Big driver heads have a lot of the mass located away from the axis of rotation (the shaf) so they spin (close) more slowly. Most "draw" clubs have weight shifted towards the heel of the club. Since there is more mass closer to the axis of rotation (the shaft) they close easier. As I remember it, Wishon's point was that while larger heads made it easier to make a more "forgiving" club for non-center shots, it creates a clubhead that is harder to close. If you are pretty good at hitting the center of the face, but not at closing the club, you might be better off getting a smaller driver head.

A agree with this in principle. When I hit a 5-wood or 3-wood, my idea of a great shot is a lot smaller target than it is with a 460cc driver. With the big driver, anything on the short grass is a round of high 5s.

Couldn't that be because of the higher loft and shorter shaft though?

      I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
