I think it is legal to put a "lump" of extra tape down though?

not sure.....this was mentioned in another thread recently when a rule was quoted about applying something to the shaft, grip, or head with the exception being it was okay to add lead weight to the head.  I think it was in the thread about adding an alignment marker to putter, but maybe have been in another thread.

@Lihu  aha....finally an answer to the original question on my pool noodle grip fiasco (btw, mods changed the subject line).

this is OT for this thread, but it would appear that the maximum diameter for a grip is 1 7/8 making my 2 inch  non conforming.

Possibly, but I'd look it up in USGA before concluding anything though. They changed some rules, so take a look first before discounting your invention.
