Is it true that, more power you try to use, more the chance you will do a slice or a push fade?

I noticed that when I relax my arm and just try to think of my clubhead and arms like a wrecking ball attached to a rope, my shots goes further drastically and straighter, even a hook at times.

Also it feels as if the clubhead cuts through the ball like butter with no resistance and no jarring to my arms.

If it is correct, how do I attain that - "power off the arms and turn the body and let the arms follow" mentallity?

Thank You!!

What you have to know is that absolute swing speed is NOT the only factor in total distance and shot shaping. It is much more important to hit the ball with proper clubhead position in relation to your target and also to your body.

This will result in much more straigther and longer shot because obviously, you lose power by having the clubhead either opened or closed at impact.

A lot of people tend to go over the top when they try to swing extra hard, thus slicing the ball. When you relax it is easier to make perfect contact, on the sweet spot, which feels more "buttery".

This is one of the things I am fighting right now. Have been taking lessons and right away my instructor told me I had way too much tension in my arms and hands. Something I have been doing is once I get set up, I squeeze the the grip very hard a couple of times. This seems to let me relax and takes most all the tension out of my arms and hands allowing me to swing easier with better tempo.

By relaxing your arms, you are creating lag, so the club head speed is maximized at the ball instead of before it would be my guess.

I pull my shots when I try to rip them.

I use too much shoulder turn and things just don't work out.

If you relax your arms too much you'll end up with a overswing though.

I feel that making this happen is related to proper tempo and sequencing. If you try to be to slow it is almost instinctive to come over the top and hit with your arms and hands. If you go to quick your body and legs get out of sequence and again you instinctively hit at it with your arms and hands because your brain knows you aren't generating any power. If your body and legs are working in sequence then you can allow your arms to just respond to what your body is doing, hopefully this means you don't need to conciously relax your arms. Unfortunately when we get swing thought heavy or tense this can be very difficult.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
