I currently use Ping Rapture clones. Right now I am consistently in the mid 80's. I am looking for a players style or slight GI set. I hit the ball fairly consistent. I do understand that a pure players club will make me hate the game for a while but, I feel that it would help me improve by knowing a I hit a bad shot. I have read quite a bit on here. It would be nice if the search function worked a bit better or if 90% of the model numbers weren't 3 characters long.

I don't really have a brand loyalty. From what I have read, I am pretty sure that something from Mizuno or Titleist will fit what I am looking for. Thanks in advance.

Pretty much any and every brand makes great player's cavity back irons. Not just Mizuno and Titleist. If you have a pro shop near, I suggest you go demo out some clubs and see what fits you best.

I'm in a similar boat, looking for new irons. Between the range and tons of rounds and living in a climate where I can play or practice almost 365, the faces are worn.

I'm planning to build a split set, although I haven't quite decided yet. I'm planning a GI style 5-iron, maybe 6-iron. Players' cavity 6 or 7 - 8 or 9, then MB on down. The exception is if I go Titleist, in which case I'll end up mixing the AP1 and AP2s.

The current sets I'm considering are Adams CB2, CB1, MB ; Mizuno MX-200, MP-57, MP-32 ; Nike VR ; Titleist AP1, AP2.

The suggestion of a pro shop is a great one; let me add to that demo days. These are happening all the time this summer, and I'm sure you can find one near you. Force yourself to try out 3 or 4 sets before deciding.

And now that I set pen to paper to actually write out what I'm considering, I left out two: a mixed Callaway set, based around the X-Forged Irons, and Titleist CB/MB. I don't know how the latter mix with the AP*.

In your search for new clubs just don't let yourself get too caught up in the "Player's Irons" syndrome...that you HAVE to have these to play better golf. Hit EVERYTHING and find out whats the best for YOU! I use the Cleveland Hibore XL irons. These are supposed to be just super-super-super-super-game improvement irons....the opposite end of the spectrum from Player's Irons....yet I'm a 4 handicap. Get what feels right to YOU and you'll see your score lower!

I dont believe you even need to buy new irons ever unless they're really old and crappy
I have a friend who is a 4 and shoots taylormade burners like the old school graphite bubble shaft burners and a whatever old cobra wedge

Don't forget Ping. The I series is great.

I love my super game improvement irons. Great to hear from a low handicapper uses SGI's, I hope mine last me for a long time.

Thank you all for the information. I just placed an order with Gigagolf for the C510's. I though about getting the m510's but I figured I will start with the cavity back forged first then see where that takes me. Again thank you all for your input.

When I was switching out irons in Spring 2009, I10 started out in first place. But model didn't have much feel so it lost out quickly.

This April I tried the I15 irons just for fun. They have a lot better feel than the I10s, and don't balloon the ball like the G10s. You might test them out.

    • Played Musgrove Mill today. 72.3/155. +9 for 15 official holes as 2 holes are closed, and the par 5 16th plays as a converted par 3. We played the first three holes over to finish 18, and parred 1 and2 amped bogeyed 3. The good: hit every fairway. 1 less than normal for the converted par 3, but the second time I have done that this year. My sand wedge approach on 10 after a monster drive hit the pin in the back left corner hit he pin and spun away to 9’, and I missed the putt.   The great: hit 8 GIR and 7 were inside 10’. Needs work: Missed every birdie putt. No lip-outs. Just struggled on fast greens. Three-putted the par-5 9th with the pin on the back tier and jut missed hitting my approach to the proper level and it spun all the way to the front of the green.
