One thing I can't figure out is I am very bad at the range, or even chipping. I hit shanks and load of crap shots, when I get out on the course I never seem to hit these kind of bad shots???? (i hit shots off line but full on shanks etc)

I am considering not going to the range anymore and just stick to play multiple balls on the course for practice.

Thoughts?

I see guys all the time just running through balls for no reason or working on something rediculous like hitting a "draw" (30 yard hooks in reality). You need to have a plan and educate yourself on what type of playable shots you should be trying to hit. Hint: a 30 yard hook or cut ain't it

Too be honest thats much better than the other way around, do you hit off mats in the range? thats usual very different, most people are good on the range and worse on the course

I think I'll just take consistency at either one right now.

I've always hit the ball better on the course than the range, especially with longer clubs. I think that it's just a matter of focus, on the course, it means something, you're really working at it, which makes it better for those of us who have that natural need to excel at whatever we do, no matter what. Other people seem to be more competitive, they care about beating their opponent, but others, like me, care more about beating their own personal best.

I'm the same way. Whenever I'm playing in tournaments warming up on the range I look a lot worse than the others warming up around me. However I still post better scores than them somehow

My warm up time (small bucket before round) translates directly to the course. If I'm hitting well during warm up, I have a pretty good round. If, like the last time I played, I'm spraying everything I know I'm in deep trouble, at least on the front 9. For whatever reason I couldn't hit my 6i last round to save my life. Normally one of my best clubs, but that day it was the worst club in the bag.

If I have to hit off the mats, I typically wait until some grass opens up... I hate hitting on the mats.

Yes most days we are on mats and I hate them. i have tour striker wich is the only thing I can hit off the mat (no leading edge so you can really hit down)

I played a round last year at a new course (new to me) and hit about 20 balls on the range. Not one of them was good - not even remotely - yet I was striping the ball all day. I must have exorcised a demon on the range!?!?!

I broke my bad practice streak. A few things helped. First I booked off 4 hours to practice, so i did not have to rush and then I set a goal for each thing that I was doing. Sand shots- I had to hole out two before I could move on, then I had to make 5 up and downs from around the green. Then I went to full shots and played 18 holes in my head tee to green. This meant I rarely hit the same shot twice in a row, and I had to practice those low under the tree shots. Hopefully this will help me on the course, and not reverse my issue of bad practice, good golf.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
