I was wondering what you teachers tell your students in regard to ball position with each club.

With a normal shot and lie where do you have them place the ball for each iron.

Which club is right in the middle and how far back and front do the irons go.

Also, I am confused about the ball position of a 3 hybrid. There are multiple opinions on where to play it from the articles I have read.

Is there to a certain degree a personal preference?

Typical ball position is never center of the stance or behind it. The wedge(s) is the closest - but is a ball or so forward of center. The driver's near the left instep or so, and everything else fits in proportionally.

A 3H would fit where a 3I would go - pretty far forward.

There is some room for personal tendencies, but overall I think people are better off making a mistake too far forward than too far back. People who have the ball too far back almost never get off their back foot.

I follow Leadbetter's guidance and I think it makes sense. Place the ball in the same location regardless of what club you're holding. Just inside the front foot. What changes is the width of your stance. So with the driver, you have the widest stance and the ball appears to be far forward. Wedge, narrow stance, ball appears to be more centered.

Here's an excellent video from Jeff Ritter showing that technique:

I've actually started to put the ball towards my back foot on longer irons and my ball striking has improved dramatically over when I had the ball towards my front foot.

Do you believe this to just be a quick-fix or patch-work to an underlying swing issue? Or is this merely a different strokes for different folks kind of deal?

It's a swing issue.

Quick fix. You need to fix your swing rather than apply some quickie fixes like that.

Good vid Ill try it out. I never put the ball behind the middle and I was getting worried about it for my wedges, but this this reafirmed my understanding.

It's a bad fix. I did that and my game suffered for 2 years.

If anything, move the ball more forward, forcing you to get the weight more forward through the swing. Moving the ball back is just putting a band aid on, which rarely works out in the long run.

I didn't know there were so many teachers on the forum!!

Limited number of active instructors here, so...yeah.
Ball position is also not definitive, there are a bit of wiggle room, like with alignment and grip. Some play every shot inside the left foot, some move it around. If a thumb rule were to be made, it would probably be to not put the ball any farther back than the middle of your stance. You can of course put it too far forward too. Somewhere between the inside of the left foot and middle of your stance and you are OK. Usually the ball moves more forward the longer club, for those who move the ball around.

I normally play from the middle of my stance with the short irons and forward to the inside of the left heel for a driver. But chipping is done from the inside right heel.

Hybrids more or less from the same position as a 7 or 6 iron.
