What's a good book for a complete beginner to learn how to properly swing a club? I searched and found a thread from 3 years ago that recommended Ben Hogan's book. Is there anything else I should consider? I've swung a club (badly) a few times. Played 18 holes a couple of times and haven't gotten under 120 (yes, I'm that bad). Rather than jump straight to expensive lessons, I want to try a book or 2 first.

And yes, I saw that there was an entire forum dedicated to books, but it seemed to be focused on discussing individual books (reviews, etc). I figured this was probably the better place to post.

Thanks!

While it may not be the swing for you, the Stack and Tilt book has the easiest to follow, clear, concise, instructions on how to build and repeat a swing.

The key to a good swing is finding one you can repeat the same actions over and over again. I;ve read lots of books and the Stack and Tilt was the easiest to follow, and clearest instruction wise.

Another GREAT book and one the doesn't get enough attention in my opinion is Jim Hardy's "The Plane Truth for Golfers" It is more of a swing theory book, but still a great read none the less

+1 to both of these. When I purchased the S&T; book from Amazon I also bought Plane Truth based on the recommendation of one of the reviews for the S&T; book. There are some pieces that the S&T; book gloss over (well not really glossed over, they are just not treated as "fundamentals" to the golf swing) that you get a bit more insight into. There are also several good drills in both books that will help you with just about any ball flight flaw you have.

Driver: Callaway Big Bertha Diablo 10.5*
Hybrids: Nickent 4DX 3+, 4, 5
Irons: Ping G15 5 - PW
Wedges: Mizuno MP-R (52*, 56*, 60*)
Putter: Cleveland Classic 4 (34" and 35")

Save yourself a lot of time and frustration. "The Golf Swing and Its Master Key Explained" by Noel Thomas. You may have to search for it on the web.

I a really good round of golf, you will hit a driver maybe 14 times, all the remaining clubs 26 times in total and a putter alone about 30 times or even more, concentrating on being a good putter, will bring you more than hitting irons like a pro.

Given that .... the about best book to buy is the Putting Bible by Dave Pelz.

Look at the used books section and if find the old John Jacobs book (not likely), "The Full Swing" by Jack Nicklaus (1980 - take a pass on some of his earlier stuff), or anything written for juniors (seriously) you should do okay.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
